Southern Conference Announces Spring Academic All-Conference
318 Student-Athletes Earn Recognition for Academic Achievements
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference today announced its Academic All-Conference team for the 2010 spring season. A total of 318 student-athletes, representing all 12 Southern Conference institutions, were named to the team.
The 318 student-athletes, which participated in baseball, softball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field recorded a 3.54 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
Six student-athletes have maintained perfect 4.0 cumulative GPAs, including Joey Thompson and Mikayla Rogers from UNC Greensboro, David Towarnicky from Appalachian State, Caroline Newman from College of Charleston, Adam Witcher from Samford and Katie Taylor from Chattanooga.
To be eligible, student-athletes must possess at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average entering the spring season and had to compete in at least one-half of their team’s competitions during the recently-concluded spring campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.
The women’s outdoor track and field programs supplied the greatest number of honorees with 77, closely followed by baseball which had 68 players qualify.
Among institutions, Samford had the highest number of academic all-conference team members with 36. Western Carolina (34), Appalachian State (31), Elon (31) and Furman (30) also had at least 30 student-athletes honored as well.
