Curry, Anderson Earn SoCon Athletes of the Year Awards

The Southern Conference honored the recipients of the league’s Athletes of the Year for the 2007-08 season at the league’s annual Honors Dinner at the Crowne Plaza Resort in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Davidson basketball standout Stephen Curry is the recipient of the Bob Waters Male Athlete of the Year Award while Chattanooga’s basketball star Alex Anderson earned the Female Athlete of the Year Award.
A sophomore, Curry was a finalist for the Wooden Award and was named to the Wooden All-America Team. The Charlotte, N.C., native was a second-team Associated Press All-American. He was named CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Player of the Year and was a CollegeInsider.com All-America Selection. Midwest Regional Most Outstanding Player, Curry was a Sports Illustrated and Sporting News second team All-America. The Sporting News named him second team All-America.
He was named SoCon Player of the Year by both the coaches and the media and was unanimously voted the MVP of the tournament. The guard was named to the USBWA District III All-District team and set an NCAA single-season record for three-pointers made with 162.
Curry is just the first men’s basketball player to earn the award in the last 17 years.
Curry has participated in the local reading program at elementary schools and has been active at the Special Olympics. He has participated in the Relay for Life and worked as a counselor at Athletes United Camp.
Anderson was named the SoCon Player of the Year in 2008 and she was the league’s leading scorer and rebounder. She was honored as SoCon Player of the Year in 2007, as well. A three-time all-SoCon selection, the Stone Mountain, Ga., native was a two-time SoCon Tournament Most Valuable Player. Anderson led Chattanooga to its ninth straight SoCon regular-season championship in 2008, its third straight SoCon Tournament title and third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
She became the first women’s basketball player in Chattanooga and SoCon history to be drafted by the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). The forward was the 39th overall selection in April by the San Antonio Silver Stars.
A psychology major, Anderson was a member of SoCon All-Academic Team and she has been a participant in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure for Breast Cancer Awareness for four years. This year, she volunteered her time serving at the Chattanooga Food Bank and Community Kitchen. Anderson conducted a basketball clinic at the Bethel Bible Village and served as a mentor to inner city youth with the Shandon Anderson Foundation. She also participated in 2007 in a Habitat for Humanity home build.
Anderson is the third consecutive Chattanooga student-athlete to earn the league’s Athlete of the Year. Last year, Lanni Marchant earned was the recipient of the award. She was a standout on the Mocs track & field and cross country teams.
