SoCon announces indoor track and field athletes of the week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford’s Bradley Franklin and VMI’s Keyandre Midgett have been named the Southern Conference men’s indoor track and field athletes of the week, respectively. Additionally, Furman’s Megan Marvin and Samford’s Antonina Tereshchenko claimed women’s track and field athlete of the week honors, respectively, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all competition from Jan. 15-21.

On Jan. 17, Franklin, a freshman, claimed the top spot in the 60m hurdles at the Samford Invitational with a time of 7.65, which broke a Samford school record in the event. Franklin's 7.65 is the fastest time any SoCon runner has logged in the event this season. Also, his performance is the second fastest time in the nation this season, ranking him sixth in the country.

Midgett, the reigning SoCon Indoor Long Jump champion, finished fifth at the Virginia Tech Invite on Jan. 17 with a conference leading distance of 7.05m. Midgett also competed in the triple jump and recorded a season-best distance of 14.53m.

Marvin, the reigning SoCon 800m champion, competed in two events at the Vanderbilt Invite on Jan. 17-18. She recorded the top conference performances in the 1K and mile runs, with times of 2:45.91 and 4:47.20, respectively.

Tereshchenko recorded a personal best at the Samford Invitational in the pole vault, with a mark of 3.82m. With this clearance, she leads the conference and posted the sixth-highest mark in Samford history.
