Mountaineers Win Germann Cup for 2006-07

Appalachian State earned the 2006-07 Germann Cup, awarded annually to the top women’s athletics program in the Southern Conference. Each school receives point based on its finish during the regular season and is awarded two additional points for winning the conference tournament. In sports where there is not a regular season champion (golf, track & field and cross country), the final results at the championship determine the points for those schools.
Appalachian State finished with 70 points, followed by Furman (67.5), Western Carolina (66.5), College of Charleston (66), Chattanooga (63.5), Davidson (53), Elon (53), UNC Greensboro (51.5), Georgia Southern (51), Wofford (23.5) and The Citadel (23.5).
Appalachian State won the indoor track & field title while Western Carolina won the regular season basketball title and the golf crown. Chattanooga won the basketball tournament, cross country crown and the regular season softball title. Furman won the regular season and tournament championship in tennis and the softball tournament title while Georgia Southern was the outdoor track & field champion. College of Charleston was the regular season and tournament champion in volleyball and UNC Greensboro annexed the regular season and tournament title in soccer.
The Germann Cup was first awarded in 1987 and is named in honor of former Southern Conference Commissioner Ken Germann, who passed away in 2005. Only three schools have won the cup beginning with Appalachian State from 1987-92. Furman won the cup from 1992-04, winning 12 consecutive Germann Cups before the College of Charleston won the 2004-05 cup. Appalachian State has won the last two German Cups.
