SoCon Announces OTF Athletes of the Week

Furman earns this week's track honors, ETSU and Chattanooga claim field recognition

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Dylan Schubert and ETSU’s Brent Bell have been named the Southern Conference men’s outdoor track and field athletes of the week, respectively. Additionally, Furman's Carly Wilkes and Chattanooga’s Stella Henry claimed women’s outdoor track and field athletes of the week honors, respectively, the conference office announced Wednesday.  

Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all competition from April 16-22.  

Schubert competed at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California, on April 16. The native of Loveland, Colorado, won the 10,000m with a time of 27:45.63. The Paladins senior set a new meet record in California, while also setting a new Furman program record after shaving 42 seconds off the former program record. Schubert is currently ranked first in the NCAA East Region and is second in the NCAA in the event.  

Bell competed at the App State Open on April 18, winning the hammer throw with a personal best heave of 54.05m. The Bucs junior now leads the conference by nearly two meters. The Johnson City, Tennessee, native also competed in the shot put, finishing third with a toss of 15.33m at the App State meet. This is Bell’s second athlete of the week recognition this season. 

On April 18, Wilkes, who is the conference leader in the 5,000m, placed eighth at the Wake Forest Invitational with a time of 15:54.45. The junior from Salem, Virginia, is now ranked No. 29 in the East Region. Wilkes earns her second athlete of the week recognition this season with this performance.

Henry competed at the Georgia Tech Invitational on April 18, reaching a mark of 5.50m in the long jump. The Mocs senior ranks third in the conference in the event this season.
