SoCon announces indoor track and field athletes of the week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – VMI’s Zachary Denton and Cameron Thomas have been named the Southern Conference men’s indoor track and field athletes of the week, respectively. Additionally, VMI’s Naturale Faison and Morgan Fraser claimed women’s track and field athlete of the week honors, respectively, the conference office announced Wednesday.  

Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all competition from Jan. 10-14. 

The VMI indoor track and field teams opened their season at home, competing in the VMI Team Challenge on Jan. 11.  

Denton claimed second-place in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.31. Along with his strong sprint performance, Denton also competed in the men’s long jump, finishing first with a 7.03m mark. The sophomore leads the SoCon in both disciplines.  

Thomas opened the season with a win in the pole vault, clearing 5.10 m, breaking a 23-year-old indoor school record. The sophomore finished in the top 5 of pole vaulters at last season’s Indoor SoCon Championships and currently leads the SoCon in the event.  

Faison clocked a time of 7.72 in the 60m dash, earning her first place at her first collegiate race and placing her second in the conference this season. Faison bested her preliminary time by over a tenth of a second in the finals.  

Fraser, a sophomore, led the way for the women’s team jumpers with a high jump mark of 1.60m, taking the lead in the SoCon and nearly matching her 2024 Indoor PR of 1.61m.  

VMI’s indoor track season continues in Blacksburg, Virginia as they travel to the Hokie Invitational Jan. 17-18.
