Southern Conference Announces Fall Academic All-Conference

319 Student-Athletes Earn Recognition for Academic Achievements

 

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Southern Conference today announced its Academic All-Conference team for the 2009 fall season. A record total of 319 student-athletes, representing all 12 Southern Conference institutions, were named to the team.

 

The 319 student-athletes, which participated in football, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball recorded a 3.56 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

 

This is the eighth year that the Southern Conference has named an Academic All-Conference Team by season, and this season’s team marked the highest overall total of honorees (319) as well as the highest average per school (26.6).

 

Ten student-athletes boasted perfect 4.0 grade point averages, including men’s cross country runners David Moore of Chattanooga and Joey Thompson of UNC Greensboro, football players Rod Chisholm of Appalachian State and Michael Roulhac of Wofford, men’s soccer players Peyton Ford of UNC Greensboro and Paulo Bonfim of Wofford, women’s soccer players Susanne Mader of Chattanooga and Shanna Couch of The Citadel and volleyball players Jessica Scott of Chattanooga and Carrie Minogue of Western Carolina.

 

To be eligible, a student-athlete must possess at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average entering the fall season and must have competed in at least one-half of their team’s competitions during the recently-concluded fall campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.

 

The league’s women’s soccer teams placed 79 student-athletes on the team with football adding 72. Elon and Wofford led all schools with 39 honorees, followed by Samford (29) and Appalachian State (28).
