Eagles won smallbore for third straight season

NCAA scorecard

CHARLESTON, S.C.
– Defending overall Southern Conference champion Georgia Southern claimed its third straight smallbore crown Saturday at the SoCon Rifle Championships at The Citadel’s Inouye Marksmanship Center in Charleston, South Carolina. GSU junior Amy Visconti claimed the individual title.

The Eagles shot a championship-record 2,315 on the day to easily outdistance runner-up North Georgia, which shot 2,270. GSU, which also tied its program record with its score, topped the championship record of 2,289 set by the Nighthawks in 2018 en route to becoming the first three-time winner of the SoCon’s smallbore championship.

Visconti shot a career-best 586 to take first place in the qualifying round, edging teammate Addy Burrow, the SoCon’s leading scorer in the event throughout the season, who shot a 585.

Visconti, who claimed Georgia Southern’s second straight individual title in the discipline, and Burrow were two of four Eagles to advance to the final. They were joined there by teammates Ashley Judson and Annaliese Mayo.

The Citadel’s James Hart IV and Charlotte Welsh, North Georgia’s Elysa Walter and Wofford’s Isabella Timmons rounded out the finals field.

There, Visconti won by the narrowest of margins on her final shot, as she totaled 450.4 to top Judson by just a tenth of a point. Burrow followed in third to make it a 1-2-3 GSU finish, while Mayo was fifth.

The Citadel finished third in the team smallbore standings with 2,269 points, just one point shy of North Georgia. UAB was fourth at 2,263, followed by VMI (2,234), VMI’s women’s team (2,199), Wofford (2,176) and The Citadel’s women’s team (2,167).

The SoCon Rifle Championship resumes Sunday with the air rifle competition. North Georgia is the three-time defending champion in the discipline, while The Citadel’s Hart is the defending individual champion.

Sunday’s first relay is set for 7:45 a.m. and the finals are scheduled to start at 2:15 p.m.
