SoCon announces OTF Athletes of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU’s Jason Bowers and Brent Bell have been named the Southern Conference men’s outdoor track and field athletes of the week, respectively. Additionally, ETSU’s Micailah Cook and The Citadel’s Ali Wilson-Ruffin claimed women’s outdoor track and field athletes of the week honors, respectively, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all competition from March 19-25.
The ETSU Bucs opened the outdoor season at the Charlotte 49ers Classic in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Bowers placed second in the 1500m with a time of 3:47.73, clocking the fastest time by a collegiate runner in the field. The junior from Parys, South Africa, also competed in the men’s 3000m, winning the race with a dominant time of 8:13.91.
Bell, a sophomore, threw a new personal best of 15.98m in the men’s shot pot, finishing seventh out of 46 athletes in the event.
Cook recorded a time of 11.81 in the 100m and a time of 24.22 in the 200m. The freshman’s 200m performance was a personal best and leads the conference. The Sandston, Viriginia, native also leads the conference in the 100m.
The Citadel opened the season in Columbia, South Carolina, at the Weems Baskin Invitational.
Ruffin, who is a senior, claimed first place in the javelin with a mark of 44.35m. The Greenville, North Carolina, product leads the SoCon in the javelin.
ETSU will continue its season at the Raleigh Relays hosted by NC State on March 27-29. The Citadel’s season continues in Davidson, North Carolina, on March 29 at the Davidson Relays.
