Spring Academic All-SoCon team announced

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Three hundred and two student-athletes earned spots on the 2015 Spring Academic All-Southern Conference Team, the league office announced Friday.
The spring academic all-conference team honors the sports of baseball, softball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, and men’s and women’s tennis.
Each of the SoCon’s 10 full-member institutions had at least nine honorees, while associate lacrosse members, eligible for the team for the first time this year, accounted for 28 selections.
To be eligible for the academic all-conference team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA entering the spring season and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams’ competitions during the recently concluded campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.
ETSU led the way with 45 total selections, including 10 in men’s outdoor track and field, eight in baseball, seven in softball, five in men’s tennis and four in men’s golf, all league highs in those sports.
Furman was second with 38 total selections, followed closely by Western Carolina with 37 and Chattanooga with 35.
Twelve student-athletes have maintained perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point averages, including ETSU’s Brooke Baxter (softball), Adam Chase (men’s outdoor track and field), Casey Horner (softball) and Verena Tobis (women’s outdoor track and field); High Point’s Tyler Cook (men’s lacrosse); Samford’s Haley Harrington (women’s golf); Chattanooga’s Helenka Kis (women’s outdoor track and field), Maddison Melchionna (women’s outdoor track and field) and Patrick O'Brien (men’s outdoor track and field); Western Carolina’s Laney Browder (women’s outdoor track and field); and Wofford’s Justin Whitaker (men’s outdoor track and field) and Alissa Williams (women’s outdoor track and field).
The league’s 10 women’s outdoor track and field programs provided the most academic all-conference members with 71, followed by men’s outdoor track and field (nine programs) with 48 and men’s lacrosse (seven programs) with 39.
