SoCon Baseball Player, Pitcher of the Week Announced
UNCG’s Cozart and VMI’s Thompson Honored
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG infielder Caleb Cozart and VMI right-hander Jack Thompson have been named the Southern Conference baseball player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for all competition from April 22-28. The awards are selected by the league office.
Cozart, who earns the honor for the second time this season, hit .667 (6-of-9) over a four-game span last week, recording two multi-hit games as he led the Spartans to their sixth straight win and 10th victory in 12 outings. The High Point, North Carolina, native posted a double and three home runs among his six hits, setting UNCG’s single-season program record with his 18th homer of the season in the Spartans’ 13-0 win over High Point last Wednesday (April 24). He drove in six runs, including three multi-RBI games and scored eight runs, while finishing the week with a 1.778 slugging percentage. He added seven walks and was hit by a pitch twice to bolster his .833 on-base percentage. Cozart was 1-for-2 with a home run and a walk in the win over High Point. He went 2-for-2 with a home run and a pair of walks in Friday's 7-2 win over VMI, then went 1-for-2 with two walks in Saturday's 8-7 victory, while finishing 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and a home run in Sunday’s series finale, a 10-4 win for the Spartans. Cozart is on an 11-game hitting streak and has reached base safely in 32 consecutive games.
Thompson earned his second save of the season by striking out four batters in 3.2 innings of work on the mound in last Tuesday night’s (April 23), 14-5, road win over William & Mary. The Reston, Virginia, native did not allow a run and walked just one batter, while limiting Tribe hitters to a .077 batting-average-against. In 16 relief appearances this season,
Thompson has 27 strikeouts, to just nine walks over 32 innings pitched.
UNCG (26-16, 10-5 SoCon) visits The Citadel (17-25, 1-14) for a three-game conference series, Friday-Sunday (May 3-5). VMI (24-23, 6-9) travels to Coppin State on Wednesday (May 1), before visiting ETSU (27-14, 9-6) over the weekend.
