SoCon baseball player, pitcher of the week announced

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina infielder Mason Holton and Mercer starter Colton Cosper have been named the Southern Conference player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for all competition from Feb. 24-March 2. The awards are selected by the league office.

Holton hit .579 this week, going 11-for-19 over five games including a midweek matchup against USC Upstate and a weekend four game series against Rider. The Overland, Kansas, native amassed a .630 on-base percentage and a 1.158 slugging percentage. He scored a team high 14 runs and drove in 10 RBIs. The senior drew five walks, was hit by a pitch, and stole one base, totaling 22 bases this week. Holton had four multi-hit games, including two three-hit outings against Rider, totaling two doubles, three home runs, and two sacrifice flies for the week. In the infield, he tallied three putouts and 11 assists.

Western Carolina (5-7) will travel to Greenville, South Carolina, for a neutral site matchup against Michigan State on Wednesday. The Catamounts will then travel to Georgia State for a weekend series starting on Friday.

Cosper started for the Bears in a 7-1 win over High Point on Feb. 28. The Carrollton, Georgia, product threw five innings and allowed zero runs on three hits. The senior left-handed pitcher recorded seven strikeouts and did not walk a batter against a High Point team that came into the weekend ranked fifth in the country in runs and third in batting average.

Mercer (9-3) will travel to Alabama State for a Wednesday matchup. The Bears will then host Southern for the weekend series beginning on Friday.
