GREENVILLE, S.C. ? The Citadel’s Asher Wojciechowski pitched a complete game, allowing only one run on five hits, to upset the No. 1 seed Elon Phoenix, 5-1, and avoid elimination at the 2009 Southern Conference Baseball Championship.

With the win, No. 3 seed The Citadel (37-21) will face the Phoenix (39-15) again in a 5 p.m. game this afternoon. The winner of that game will advance to Sunday’s championship game.

Elon’s batters were stymied all day by Wojciechowski (3-3), as the sophomore struck out a career-high 15 batters while tossing 144 pitches.

Suffering the loss was Elon’s Tom Porter (2-4), who gave up four runs on seven hits in seven innings of work.

The Phoenix, who came into the game averaging 16 hits and 12.5 runs per game in the tournament, was held to a single run, which came in the seventh on back-to-back balks by Wojciechowski that advanced Pat Irvine from second to home. Prior to the game, Elon had scored 10 or more runs in its last six SoCon Tournament games.

The Citadel, on the other hand, scored a single run in five different innings to put the game away. Third baseman David Greene hit what proved to be the winning run in the second inning when he hit a solo homer, to extend the Bulldogs’ lead to 2-0.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Nick Orvin who was 4-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI. David Greene went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. In a losing effort, Irvine was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
