SoCon baseball player, pitcher of the week announced

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer shortstop Bradley Frye and Samford starting pitcher Miller Riggins have been named the Southern Conference player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for all competition from March 31-April 6. The awards are selected by the league office.

Frye hit .500 this week, going 9-for-18 over four games this week, including a midweek 21-5 setback against Georgia Tech, and a SoCon series win over VMI. The Marietta, Georgia, native scored one run on one hit and a walk against Georgia Tech on Tuesday, April 1. In game one of the weekend series, a 22-2 victory for the Bears, Frye had three runs on four hits including a double and a home run with five RBIs. On Saturday, April 5, the shortstop scored one run on one hit and a walk in an 8-7 loss. In the final game of the series, the senior recorded three runs and drove in five RBIs on three hits including a double and a home run to help lift Mercer to a 13-4 win.

Mercer (21-12, 5-4 SoCon) will travel to Florida A&M on Tuesday then returns home to host Georgia Southern on Wednesday. The Bears will host Charleston Southern for the weekend series beginning on Friday, April 11.

Riggins started for the Bulldogs on Friday to open the weekend series against Wofford. The senior pitched a complete game shutout as Samford won the game 14-0 in seven innings. The Collierville, Tennessee, product logged five strikeouts, allowed only three hits, and held Wofford to a .130 batting average to record the win.

Samford (17-15, 4-2 SoCon) will host West Georgia for a Tuesday matchup, then welcome The Citadel for the weekend series beginning Friday.
