SoCon Announces Spring Academic All-Conference

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – More than 300 student-athletes earned spots on the Academic All-Southern Conference Team for the 2013 spring season, the league office announced Tuesday.

All 12 SoCon institutions were represented on the 303-member team, which honored student-athletes from the sports of baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field.

Each of the 12 league schools placed at least 18 student-athletes on the team, with Western Carolina leading the way with 35. Wofford was right behind the Catamounts with 34, while Elon and Furman had 31 each. Samford had 30.

Thirteen student-athletes boast perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point averages, including: Appalachian State’s Kristen Terry (softball) and Debra Domermuth (women’s outdoor track and field); College of Charleston’s Kelly Kambourelis (women’s tennis) and Christin Newman (women’s tennis); Georgia Southern’s Breigh Findlay (softball) and Marla Thompson (softball); UNCG’s Andrea Rangel (women’s golf) and Alex Whitehead (women’s tennis); Chattanooga’s Patrick O’Brien (men’s outdoor track and field), Mette Kryger (women’s golf) and Rachel Greenwall (women’s outdoor track and field); and Wofford’s Katie Kessler (women’s outdoor track and field) and Alissa Williams (women’s indoor track and field).

To be eligible, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA entering the spring season and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams’ competitions during the recently concluded spring campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.

The league’s 12 women’s outdoor track and field teams provided the most academic all-conference members with 81, followed by men’s outdoor track and field with 44 and baseball with 41.
