SoCon Baseball Player, Pitcher of the Week Announced

Western Carolina’s Ketterman and Wofford’s Cowan Honored

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina infielder Zach Ketterman and Wofford right-hander Zac Cowan have been named the Southern Conference baseball player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for all competition from April 15-21. The awards are selected by the league office.

Ketterman, who earns the honor for the second straight week, hit .571 (8-of-14) last week, recording three multi-hit games as he led the Catamounts to a pair of wins. The Biglerville, Pennsylvania, native posted a pair of home runs, drove in eight runs, including two multi-RBI games and scored four runs, while finishing the week with a 1.000 slugging percentage. He added four walks to bolster his .667 on-base percentage and added three stolen bases on the week. Ketterman reached base four times, including a 3-for-3 effort with a walk in the 10-5 win over Appalachian State last Tuesday night (April 16). He went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in Friday's 6-4 loss to Samford, then collected his second three-run home run in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, finishing 2-for-3 with a pair of walks to reach base four times in the run-ruled 12-2 win in seven innings. Ketterman is on an 11-game hitting streak that includes eight multi-hit efforts and multiple RBIs six times.

Cowan turned in the best performance of his career last Friday night (April 19) at Mercer, allowing just one earned run over a career-high nine full innings of work on the mound. Despite absorbing a no-decision that the Terriers eventually won, 9-2, in 12 innings, Cowan struck out a career-high 14 batters, the fifth-most in program history. The Blythewood, S.C., native, surrendered just one walk and six hits, with just four other runners reaching scoring position. Cowan is the first Wofford hurler to pitch 9.0 innings since Matthew Marchal's complete game against UNCG in last season's SoCon Tournament. Cowan limited the Bears to a .188 batting-average-against.

Western Carolina (21-16, 6-6 SoCon) visits No. 2 Tennessee in a midweek contest on Tuesday (April 23), before traveling to Wofford (26-11, 7-4) for a three-game conference series, Friday-Sunday (April 26-28). Wofford travels to UNC Asheville on Tuesday (April 23), before the Catamounts visit over the weekend.
