SoCon baseball player, pitcher of the week presented by Holston Gases announced

Mercer’s Frye named Player of the Week, VMI’s Plummer selected as Pitcher of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer shortstop Bradley Frye and VMI starter Caden Plummer have been named the Southern Conference player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for all competition from Feb. 17-23. The awards are presented by Holston Gases and are selected by the league office.

Frye hit .647 this week, going 11-for-17 over four games including a midweek win over Kennesaw State and a series victory over Kent State. The Marietta, Georgia, product batted .500 and scored one run on one hit and two walks in a 9-4 success over the Owls on Feb. 19. In the first game of the weekend series on Feb. 21, Frye went 3-for-5 with a single, two RBIs and two runs scored to aid the Bears in a 9-5 win. The next day, the senior shortstop hit .600 again over five at-bats, driving in two RBIs and scoring two runs in a 7-6 victory. To finish the series, Frye went 4-for-5, with two doubles, three RBIs, and one run. For the week, he had a .647 batting average, .700 on-base percentage, and a .824 slugging percentage.

Mercer (6-1) hosts Florida A&M for a series this week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday. The Bears will also host High Point for two games on Friday and Sunday.

Plummer opened the weekend on the mound for the Keydets. On Friday, in a 15-2 victory, the Mechanicsville, Virginia, native threw six innings and allowed one unearned run. The senior right-hander logged a career-high 13 strikeouts, the most in a single game for a VMI pitcher since 2019, and gave up two hits and walked two batters. Plummer is now 2-0 on the mound with a .75 era. 

VMI (7-0) is currently at the top of the SoCon standings and travels to No. 10 Virginia for a Tuesday matchup. The Keydets will then host Norfolk State for the weekend series beginning on Saturday.

Also nominated for pitcher of the week: Ben Brash (The Citadel), Jace Hyde (ETSU), Jeb Johnson (Mercer), Noah Chapman (UNCG), Davis Wright (Western Carolina) and Cullen Condon (Wofford).
