SoCon announces Spring Academic All-Conference team

Annual list includes 595 selections

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Four hundred and seventy-five student-athletes earned 595 spots on the Spring 2023 Academic All-Southern Conference Team, the league office announced Tuesday.

“Institutions in the Southern Conference emphasize education,” SoCon Commissioner Michael Cross said. “As a league, we’re proud to honor and recognize the academic performance of each of the college athletes named to the Academic All-SoCon team. The dedication and diligence necessary to balance classroom performance and athletic commitments represents uncommon excellence.”

The sports of men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, rifle, wrestling, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball and softball are represented on the Spring Academic All-SoCon team.

To be eligible for the academic all-conference team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average at the conclusion of the spring semester and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams’ competitions during the recently concluded campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least three semesters at their institutions, making true freshmen and first-year transfers ineligible for inclusion.

Forty-three student-athletes have maintained perfect 4.0 cumulative GPAs, with Chattanooga leading the way with nine.

The league’s 10 women’s outdoor track and field teams led the way with 99 academic all-conference selections, while the nine women’s indoor track and field programs combined for 84. The eight men’s outdoor track and field teams combined for 54 selections.

Samford led all schools with 85 academic all-conference selections, followed by Western Carolina with 72 and Wofford with 71.

The 595 total selections are the third-highest total in conference history for the spring academic all-conference team.
