Game 14 Quotes

Game 14: The Citadel 10, Western Carolina 3

The Citadel

Head Coach Fred Jordan

On this championship team... “Team.  This is the most unselfish group that we may have ever had.  They are a very special team with everything they do.  They are a fun group to be around.”

On starting Asher Wojciechowski... “I was leaning that way.  Obviously, I had to see how he felt and I wanted to see who we played from a matchup standpoint.  At 8:45 last night, he called me, and he said, ?Coach, I want the rock.’  There was no way I was going to argue with him, and he held his end of the bargain up.”

Junior Starting Pitcher Asher Wojciechowski

On starting today’s game... “I want the ball in a situation like this, so I couldn’t not go out there.  I had to have the ball, so coach gave it to me.”

Senior Shortstop Kyle Jordan

On winning the tournament... “It’s a good feeling.  We came in as freshman, and were able to make it to the championship game, but weren’t able to finish it off.  To go out as seniors like this feels really good.”

Senior Second Baseman Bryan Altman

On the NCAA Regionals... “To me, it’s still tournament play, and in tournament play, anything can happen.  Everyone is going to be fired up to play whoever it is.  We’re just going to be ourselves, and that’s the bottom line.”

Western Carolina

Head Coach Bobby Moranda

Opening Statement... “Well, first off, I’m very proud of my team, the run that we made in this tournament, and the adversity that we’ve been through the entire year.  We had several injuries that set us back in league play.  We had a lot of stuff go against us, and we held it together to have a great year.  Obviously, we’re very disappointed we didn’t win a championship, but I’m very proud of our leadership on our team, I’m proud of our program and the direction that it’s going, and the effort that our guys have when they play the game.  It was an exciting tournament for our program.  We’ll be back.”

On Matt Benedict... “He was our best option.  If you look at that game, they hit a ball hard to start the game, and they hit a lot of ground balls that three feet to the other way could be an out.  I’ve got to give credit to The Citadel?they had a good approach.  They definitely know how to manufacture runs.  My hats are off to them, but yes, Matt was our best option.  I would do it again and have no reservations.”

Starting Pitcher Matt Benedict

On falling behind early... “I was still in the same frame of mind.  I really feel like I didn’t pitch any different today than I did any other day throughout the season, I just got different results.”

On how he felt... “I didn’t feel too much difference.  I’ve been working on short rest the last couple of weeks to get ready for this, but I was just going to give it everything I had.”
