Saturday's Baseball Roundup

Wofford 11, Villanova 10
Down 7-2 midway through the fourth inning, the Wofford baseball team battled back to claim the lead and stave off a Wildcat comeback push to claim an 11-10 victory at Russell C. King Field Saturday afternoon. Wofford improves to 17-7 as Villanova falls to 11-10. Cullen Condon started for Wofford and tossed 3.0 innings with five runs (two earned) allowed. Carter Rasmussen hurled 2.1 innings in relief before Champ Davis (5-0) finished off the remaining 3.2 frames to seal the win. Rasmussen and Davis each picked up three strikeouts.

VMI 5, Western Carolina 4|
VMI Baseball earned its first Southern Conference victory of the 2025 campaign on Saturday after a nailbiter against Western Carolina at Hennon Stadium. The Keydets (15-8, 1-1 SoCon) gained an early lead and never looked back against the Catamounts in a tight 5-4 win. With the triumph, VMI evens the series and its conference record heading into the rubber match.

ETSU 10, Samford 3
The ETSU baseball team collected its sixth consecutive win with a 10-3 victory over Samford at Thomas Stadium on Saturday. Saturday's win clinches the series win for the Bucs and boosts their overall record to 18-4 on the 2025 season. A day after being held to just five hits, the Bucs totaled 13 on Saturday. Both Blake Jacklin and Axel Melendez collected three hits, while Joey Little added two of his own. Jamie Palmese and Tristan Curless both homered to round out the offensive leaders for the Bucs on Saturday.

The Samford University baseball team dropped a 10-3 decision in the second game of a three-game Southern Conference series at ETSU Saturday afternoon at Thomas Stadium. With the loss, Samford dropped its season record to 12-11 overall and 0-2 in Southern Conference play. ETSU improved to 18-4 overall and 2-0 in league play. Samford was led in the loss by Jake Souders, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Michael Gupton hit a two-run home run in a 1-for-2 performance. Cameron Keshock (3-1) pitched 5.2 innings, giving up eight runs, seven earned, on 10 hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford.

The Citadel 8, Mercer 0
The Citadel scored eight runs on eight hits. The Citadel has taken the series in back-to-back matchups against the Bears. The Bulldogs took the series against Mercer in Macon last season. Three Bulldogs recorded multi-hit games. Travis Elliott went 2-for-5, bringing his season average to .247. He currently has a streak of reaching base nine times. Landon Kahl went 2-4 with an RBI single, his second RBI of the season. Thomas Rollauer recorded two hits and a run, posting his sixth multi-hit game. Lane Tobin hit his second double of the season and recorded his ninth RBI. The Bulldogs tied a season-high six steals, bringing their season total to 44. George Derrick Floyd (1-0) pitched six shutout innings, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out two batters. Yates Bland (S, 1) recorded the save after throwing 3.0 innings, giving up four hits and zero earned runs.

The Mercer baseball team was never able to get going on Saturday, falling to The Citadel by a score of 8-0. Drew Johnson (3-for-4) had his first career three-hit day, while Titan Kamaka (2-for-5) and Bradley Frye (2-for-5) also had multi-hit performances. George Derrick Floyd (1-0) got the win for the Bulldogs, with Braydon Kersey (1-2) taking the loss for Mercer. 

UConn 5, UNCG 2
The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team dropped game two of a three-game weekend series, 5-2, to the UConn Huskies in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium. The Huskies scored the game's first run when Tyler Minick launched a solo home run over to right-center to start the fourth inning. In the next at bat, Grant MacArthur doubled to left-center before scoring on a single up the middle by Anthony Belisario. Caleb Shpur tacked on two more runs for the Huskies when he hit a two-run triple into the right-field corner. After four frames in the Gate City, UConn led UNCG by a 4-0 margin.
