SoCon Announces Spring Academic All-Conference Team

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Southern Conference today announced its Academic All-Conference team for the 2008 spring season. A total of 244 student-athletes in eight sports, representing all 11 Southern Conference institutions, were named to the team.

The 244 student-athletes averaged a 3.54 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average entering the spring season and must have competed in at least one-half of their team’s competitions during the recently-concluded campaign.

This is the sixth year that the Southern Conference has named an All-Academic Team by season.

Three student-athletes boasted perfect 4.0 grade point averages, including baseball player David Towarnicky of Appalachian State, women’s golfer Katie Taylor of Chattanooga and outdoor track and field athlete Jess Weber of UNC Greensboro.

The league’s women’s outdoor track and field teams placed 62 student-athletes on the academic team while 38 baseball players and 36 men’s outdoor track and field athletes were honored. Western Carolina led the way among SoCon schools with 34 student-athletes recognized, followed by Appalachian State (28), Elon (26), Georgia Southern (25) and Furman (24).
