Bucs rally to knock off Longwood, 5-4, in 11 innings to complete the sweep
The ETSU baseball team rallied twice and overcame multiple miscues in the field to defeat Longwood by a score of 5-4 in 11 innings on Saturday afternoon at Thomas Stadium. Saturday's win completes the Bucs' sweep of the Lancers and boosts ETSU's record to 15-4 this season. Cody Miller and Axel Melendez each had two hits on Saturday to account for four of ETSU's 10 hits on the day. Melendez drove in two with a game-winning single, while Miller went 2-for-4 with a double and a stolen base. Jamie Palmese slugged ETSU's lone home run in the win, which was his seventh of the season.
Wofford Baseball Evens Series with Elon Behind 14-3 Triumph
The Wofford baseball team used eight runs over the final four innings Saturday afternoon at Latham Park to best the Elon Phoenix on the road in a 14-3 eight-inning win. The Terriers trailed 3-0 after the first, but a five-run second frame flipped the margin for good before a later offensive outburst put the contest away. The Terriers improve to 13-6 as the Phoenix fall to 8-10. Wofford used just two pitchers in the game. Cullen Condon started and pitched the first 4.0 frames, allowing three runs on three hits and four walks with a pair of punchouts. Champ Davis (4-0) polished off the last 4.0 innings to secure the win. He struck out five batters and allowed no runs or hits.
Miller’s 11 Strikeouts and Holland’s Two-Run Single Sends UNCG Baseball Past N.C. A&T
The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team won 4-2 over the North Carolina A&T Aggies in a non-conference game on Saturday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium. Junior right-handed pitcher Jay Miller took the ball for the Spartans to make his fifth start of the season. In seven innings of work, Miller struck out a career-high 11 batters while allowing just four hits and a pair of runs (one earned) with one walk surrendered. Danny Thompson Jr. entered the game in relief to begin the eighth and threw two no-hit innings with three strikeouts.
Keydets bested twice by Bulldogs
VMI Baseball was swept in Saturday's doubleheader by Yale at George H.W. Bush Field. The Keydets, who fall to 13-6, dropped both games in the doubleheader to the Bulldogs. In game one, VMI's slow start ended with an 11-6 loss followed by a tough 6-2 defeat in game two.
Bears Fall To Tennessee Tech
The Mercer baseball team jumped out to an early lead with a five-run third inning, but Tennessee Tech answered with a five-run inning of their own in the seventh en route to a comeback victory by a score of 9-7 on Saturday afternoon. Parker Lester (2-for-4, 4 RBI), Bradley Frye (2-for-5) and Ty Dalley (1-for-3) each homered for the Bears, including back-to-back shots from Frye and Dalley in the third. Jack Brafa (4-1) earned the win for Tennessee Tech, while Craig Kalkbrenner (0-1) took the loss for Mercer.
Slow Start Prevents Western Carolina Sweep as EIU Wins Finale, 9-5
Hayden Friese belted a seventh-inning grand slam home run as part of driving in all five of Western Carolina's runs on Saturday afternoon, but it was not enough as Eastern Illinois rode a strong start to claim the nonconference series finale 9-5 at Childress Field / Hennon Stadium. WCU won best-of-three series after Friday's doubleheader sweep, but the Catamounts couldn't complete their first three-game sweep of the season with Saturday's loss.
The Citadel's Floyd Records Three-Hit Day; Owls Even the Series with the Bulldogs
The Citadel recorded four runs on five hits. Freshman Maddox Floyd recorded a team-high three hits and is first three-hit game of his career. Travis Elliott recorded two RBIs, including the game-tying RBI in the ninth inning. Elliott recorded his team-leading 13th RBI of the season. Smith Pinson (2-0) picked up the win for the Owls after throwing 1.2 innings with one hit. Pinson faced six batters. Anthony Hausner (0-1) recorded the loss for The Citadel after allowing three hits on four earned runs.
