Wednesday's Baseball Roundup

Mercer 9, Florida A&M 2
Mercer shortstop Bradley Frye continued to tear the cover off the baseball and Bryce Hawkins dominated on the mound to help the Bears pick up their eighth straight victory on Wednesday, defeating Florida A&M by a score of 9-2 at OrthoGeorgia Park. Frye (2-for-3, 5 RBI) had his fifth consecutive multi-hit game and launched a grand slam, while Ty Dalley (1-for-4, 3 RBI) homered for the second game in a row to power the Bears at the plate. Hawkins (1-0) earned his first win as a Bear with five shutout innings in relief, striking out three. Blake Pacheco (0-1) took the loss for Florida A&M.

Wofford 13, Davidson 6
With the game tied at three entering the fourth, Tyler Bak delivered his first-career home run for Wofford to push the Terriers in front for a lead they would not relinquish. Michael Sills stunned with 4.2 scoreless innings out the bullpen to help secure Wofford's 13-6 victory over Davidson at Wilson Field Wednesday evening. Wofford improves to 8-1 as the Wildcats dip to 2-5. The Terriers used four pitchers in the contest with Mason Compton earning the starting nod. He tossed 2.0 innings with three runs allowed alongside three strikeouts. John Gray tossed 1.1 innings with three punchouts before turning the ball over to Michael Sills (1-0), who turned in a career outing to earn the win.

USC Upstate 16, Western Carolina 10
Cole Jones homered twice, and Trey Spees belted his first career round-tripper on Wednesday afternoon, but Western Carolina was unable to overcome 16 runs by USC Upstate over the game's first five innings as the Spartans scored the series split, holding off the Catamounts 16-10 in nonconference action at Harley Park. Jones hit a two-run home run in the top of the first as the Catamounts took the early lead only to see the home-standing Spartans plate three in the bottom of the frame to lead by one through one. Spees delivered a game-tying solo homer in the second only to see USC Upstate plating two in the home half to retake the advantage, 5-3.
