SoCon announces Academic All-Conference team

351 student-athletes earn recognition for academic achievements

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Three hundred and fifty-one student-athletes earned spots on the Fall 2019 Academic All-Southern Conference Team, the league office announced Wednesday.
 
Each of the SoCon’s 10 full member institutions had at least 25 honorees, representing the sports of men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball. Belmont, which competes as an associate member in men’s soccer, had six selections.
 
To be eligible for the academic all-conference team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average at the conclusion of the fall semester and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams’ competitions during the recently concluded campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least three semesters at their institutions, making true freshmen and first-year transfers ineligible for inclusion.
 
Twenty-one student-athletes have maintained perfect 4.0 cumulative GPAs, including: The Citadel’s Brandon Rainey (football), Raleigh Webb (football) and Mel Mikoy (women’s soccer); ETSU's Josh Krafsur (men’s cross country); Furman’s Hamp Sisson (football) and Isabella Gutierrez (women’s soccer); Mercer's Collin Foster (football), Eric Jackson (football), Roberta Todd (volleyball) and Marina Van Sickle (women's cross country); UNC Greensboro's Maria Esch (volleyball), Kaitlyn Stone (women's cross country) and Kaley Tucker (women's soccer); Samford's Taylore Miller (women's soccer) and Caroline Orman (women's soccer); Chattanooga's Johnathan Boyd (men’s cross country), Jacob Ethridge (men’s cross country), Megan Kaufman (volleyball) and Abby Bateman (women's cross country); Western Carolina's Emily Zipay (women's soccer); and Wofford's Maggie Adcock (women's soccer).
 
The league’s 10 women’s soccer teams led the way with 107 academic all-conference selections, while the nine football schools were second with 79 and the nine volleyball programs were third with 51.
 
Mercer led all schools with 59 members on the academic all-conference team, while Chattanooga was second with 41 and ETSU was third with 36.
