SPARTANBURG, S.C. – More than 300 student-athletes earned spots on the Academic All-Southern Conference Team for the 2012 fall semester, the league office announced Friday.
The 304 student-athletes on the team surpassed last year’s fall total by three. Among the 304 student-athletes were at least 14 representatives from each of the 12 SoCon institutions, participating in men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball.
Fifteen student-athletes have maintained perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point averages, including The Citadel’s Grace Raines; Davidson’s James Durling; Georgia Southern’s Emily Archer, Moriah Bellissimo, Kym Coley, Thomas Hamilton and David Vargas Masis; Chattanooga’s Patrick O’Brien, Bryn Oliver and Christina Teter; Western Carolina’s Conner Orr and Michelle Provost; and Wofford’s Justin Whitaker, Alissa Williams and Rachel Woodlee.
To be eligible, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA entering the fall season and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams’ competitions during the recently concluded fall campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.
The league’s 12 women’s soccer programs provided the most academic all-conference members with 79, followed by football with 58 and women’s cross country with 51.
Among member institutions, Wofford led all schools with 37 members on the academic all-conference team. Appalachian State was second with 33, edging Elon, which had 32.
