Southern Conference Announces Fall Academic All-Conference

298 Student-Athletes Earn Recognition for Academic Achievements
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference today announced its Academic All-Conference team for the 2008 fall season. A total of 298 student-athletes, representing all 12 Southern Conference institutions, were named to the team.
The 298 student-athletes, which participated in football, men’s and women’s cross country, volleyball and men’s and women’s soccer, averaged a 3.55 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
Six student-athletes boasted perfect 4.0 grade point averages, including men’s cross country runner David Moore of Chattanooga, men’s soccer player Mark Beville of Georgia Southern, volleyball players Courtney Barnes of Chattanooga and Sarah Schermerhorn of Elon and women’s cross country runners Dani Reese of Appalachian State and Jordyn Radke of Chattanooga.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must possess at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average entering the fall season and must have competed in at least one-half of their team’s competitions during the recently-concluded fall campaign.
This is the seventh year that the Southern Conference has named an Academic All-Conference Team by season.
The league’s women’s soccer teams placed 72 student-athletes on the team with football adding 55. Wofford led all schools with 44 honorees, followed by Elon with 38, The Citadel with 27 and Furman and Samford with 25 each.
