SoCon Announces Fall Academic All-Conference Team

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – More than 300 student-athletes earned spots on the Fall 2013 Academic All-Southern Conference Team, the league office announced Monday.

With one fewer school in the league than last season, the 11 SoCon schools combined for 27 more honorees than last fall, with 331 student-athletes earning the distinction. That total is the second-most in league history, trailing only the 2010 fall season, which saw 345 student-athletes take the honor. Each of this year’s 11 institutions had at least 22 honorees, representing the sports of football, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball.

A league-record 21 student-athletes have maintained perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point averages, including Appalachian State’s Alex Herbst; The Citadel’s Eric Goins and Kristen Kessinger; Davidson’s James Durling; Furman’s Andrea Fisher; Georgia Southern’s Emily Archer, Kym Coley, Thomas Hamilton and CaitlinTongco; UNCG’s Noah DeAngelo, Zoe Fishman, Preston Ford, Eira Jensen and Jamie Simmons; Chattanooga’s Skylar Brewer, Clare Latham and Patrick O’Brien; Western Carolina’s Elyssa Mulheron; and Wofford’s Vicky Hill, Justin Whitaker and Alissa Williams.

The previous record for 4.0 GPAs, 16, was set by the 2011 fall squad.

To be eligible for the academic all-conference team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA entering the fall season and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams’ competitions during the recently concluded fall campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.

The league’s 11 women’s soccer programs provided the most academic all-conference members with 93, followed by football with 62 and women’s cross country with 55.

Among member institutions, Appalachian State led all schools with 40 members on the academic all-conference team. Elon and Wofford tied for second with 36 each.
