SoCon Announces Fall Academic All-Conference team

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Two hundred ninety-two student-athletes earned spots on the Fall 2014 Academic All-Southern Conference Team, the league office announced Monday.
Each of the SoCon’s 10 institutions had at least 12 honorees, representing the sports of men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball.
Nineteen student-athletes have maintained perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point averages, including The Citadel’s Eric Goins and Dylan Maier; ETSU’s Briana Allmon and Adam Chase; Furman’s Lauren Pinion; Mercer’s Victoria Penrod; UNCG’s Noah DeAngelo; Chattanooga’s Hailey Callis, Clare Latham, Maddison Melchionna, Patrick O’Brien, Katie Ray, Harry Smithers and Jessica York; Western Carolina’s Laney Browder; and Wofford’s Vicki Hill, Jonathan Rice, Justin Whitaker and Alissa Williams.
The 19 perfect GPAs are just two shy of the SoCon’s fall record, set last season, when there were 11 schools in the league.
To be eligible for the academic all-conference team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA entering the fall season and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams’ competitions during the recently concluded fall campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.
The league’s 10 women’s soccer programs provided the most academic all-conference members with 83, followed by football with 66 and volleyball with 44.
Mercer led all schools with 40 members on the academic all-conference team, while Wofford was close behind with 37 and Chattanooga was third with 34.
