SPARTANBURG, S.C.&nbsp;– The Southern Conference announced its 2024-25 men’s basketball league schedule Tuesday. The SoCon’s 10 men’s basketball teams will all play double-round-robin, 18-game intraleague schedules, totaling 90 league contests over nine weeks from Wednesday, Jan. 1, to Saturday, March 1.&nbsp;All 10 teams open league play on Jan. 1. After another full lineup of games on Saturday, Jan. 4, the schedule settles into a Wednesday-Saturday format outside a pair of Thursday games on Jan. 9 and Feb. 27. UNCG versus Chattanooga and VMI against Samford will be the home-and-home matchups on those two Thursdays. Additional games might later be moved due to national television assignments.Among other notable games on the slate this season, Samford hosts ETSU on Saturday, Jan. 18, in a matchup of the two squads that squared off for the tournament title back in March. The teams face off again exactly three weeks later at ETSU.Mercer’s Ryan Ridder, who comes to Macon after three seasons as the head man at UT Martin, begins his first stint through the league when the Bears host Chattanooga. Western Carolina’s Tim Craft, who served as the head coach at Gardner-Webb for the last 11 seasons, opens his first season in Cullowhee at home versus Furman on New Year’s Day.The 2025 Ingles Southern Conference Basketball Championship will take place at Harrah’s Cherokee Center – Asheville in Asheville, North Carolina, from March 7-10.&nbsp;Full broadcast schedules will be announced later, but all 10 schools’ home games will air on ESPN+ if not selected for national or regional broadcast. Spartanburg, S.C.&nbsp;– The Southern Conference and Athletic Sun Conference announced a two-year scheduling alliance for men’s basketball on Wednesday. Each SoCon team will play two games against ASUN opponents through this alliance, games will take place in early November and December.This agreement comes in response to the emphasis placed on NET rankings for postseason prospects and an ever-changing landscape in college athletics which, for many, has made it difficult to fill a 30-game schedule with quality opponents.The Southern Conference Commissioner, Michael Cross, said, “We are very excited to partner with the ASUN to form a two-year scheduling alliance.&nbsp; It is apparent to anyone involved in men’s basketball that the current scheduling process is flawed and that getting two teams to agree to play one another is incredibly difficult.&nbsp; As NCAA Tournament access has continued to erode for mid-major programs and conference schedules expand due to conference realignment, identifying meaningful non-conference games against attractive regional opponents has become very important.&nbsp; Leadership from the Directors of Athletics in both conferences and willingness from the coaches to experiment with this concept were the necessary ingredients to establish this alliance.&nbsp; Their willingness to recognize that change is needed in scheduling took vision and compromise.&nbsp; I’m confident this will be a very beneficial partnership for both the SoCon and the ASUN.”The men’s basketball scheduling alliance will feature attractive matchups across both rounds, providing a memorable experience and new level of excitement to the fans of all 22 schools. 2024 Ingles SoCon Basketball Championships ticket info

KANSAS CITY, Mo. –&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href="https://nabc.com/nabc_releases/2024/nabc-names-division-i-all-district-teams-coaches-of-the-year/">NABC has released the 2023-24 NABC Division I All-District Teams and District Coaches of the Year</a>, with the District 21 teams comprising 10 Southern Conference student-athletes and Samford's Bucky McMillan named the District 21 Coach of the Year.

 The All-District honors are voted on by NABC-member coaches across NCAA Division I.
 &nbsp;
 SoCon Player of the Year Vonterius Woolbright of Western Carolina was joined on the all-district first team by Furman's JP Pegues, UNCG duo Mikeal Brown-Jones and Keyshaun Langley and Samford's Achor Achor.
 &nbsp;
 The second team included Mercer's Jalyn McCreary, Samford's Rylan Jones, Chattanooga's Trey Bonham and Honor Huff and Wofford's Corey Tripp.
 &nbsp;
 Langley earned his second straight first-team all-district selection, while Woolbright was a second-team pick last year.
 &nbsp;
 McMillan led Samford to its first outright SoCon regular-season championship this season as well as the Bulldogs' first SoCon tournament title since the program joined the league in 2008.

NABC names all-district teams, coaches of the year

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah. – The 13th-seeded Samford men's basketball team nearly erased a 22-point second-half deficit before eventually falling to fourth-seeded Kansas, 93-89, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Thursday evening in the Delta Center. 
  
"This was a great game," Samford head coach <dfn><a data-airgap-id="48" href="https://samfordsports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/bucky-mcmillan/1639" rel="smarttag" rev="1639">Bucky McMillan</a></dfn> said. "We kind of knew what it would be. They'd be trying to impose their will on the inside, and we'd obviously try to space and play fast and make threes. I had no doubt if we could get it to single digits, in my mind, under the 10-minute mark, I thought we would win. We've kind of been in these spots before where we'd have big come backs and we have the juice at the end of the game, and I thought we had it. A play here, a play there, it could be different." 
  
The NCAA Tournament appearance was just the third in school history and the first since 2000. Samford ended its season with a record of 29-6, setting a school record for most wins in a season. The Bulldogs also won the program's first outright Southern Conference regular season championship and first SoCon Tournament title. Kansas improved to 23-10 with the win, and advanced to take on Gonzaga in Saturday's second round. 
  
Samford was led in the loss by <dfn><a data-airgap-id="49" href="https://samfordsports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/achor-achor/8201" rel="smarttag" rev="8201">Achor Achor</a></dfn> with 23 points and eight rebounds. <dfn><a data-airgap-id="50" href="https://samfordsports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/jaden-campbell/8186" rel="smarttag" rev="8186">Jaden Campbell</a></dfn> scored 18 points, while <dfn><a data-airgap-id="51" href="https://samfordsports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/riley-allenspach/8568" rel="smarttag" rev="8568">Riley Allenspach</a></dfn> added 15 points. <dfn><a data-airgap-id="52" href="https://samfordsports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/rylan-jones/8565" rel="smarttag" rev="8565">Rylan Jones</a></dfn>, while playing in his hometown, scored nine points and tied a career high with nine assists. 
  
Kansas was led in scoring by K.J. Adams with 20 points. Hunter Dickinson tallied 19 points and 20 rebounds. Nicolas Timberlake had 19 points, Johnny Furphy had 16 points and Dajuan Harris added 13 points for the Jayhwawks. 
  
After trailing by 22 points in the second half, Samford cut the lead to just one point at 79-78 and again at 90-89. Timberlake, however, made two late free throws with 14 seconds left and Furphy made one with one second to go to help Kansas pull put the 93-89 win. 
  
With Kansas leading, 8-7 early, the Jayhawks went on an 8-0 run to push their lead to 16-7 with 15:45 left in the first half following a free throw by Dickinson. Kansas extended its lead to 11 points at 24-13 at the 12:47 mark in the first half after a layup by Dickinson. Samford closed to within seven points at 28-21 with 10:17 to go in the first half after a free throw by <dfn><a data-airgap-id="53" href="https://samfordsports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/josh-holloway/8560" rel="smarttag" rev="8560">Josh Holloway</a></dfn>. 
  
Kansas then went on a 10-1 run to push its lead to 16 points at 38-22 with 7:32 to go in the first half after a pair of free throws by Harris. Samford answered with a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 10 points at 38-28 with 4:40 left in the opening half following a dunk by Achor. The Bulldogs closed to within eight points 44-36 with 1:23 to go in the half after a three-pointer by <dfn><a data-airgap-id="54" href="https://samfordsports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/garrett-hicks/8562" rel="smarttag" rev="8562">Garrett Hicks</a></dfn>. Kansas took a 48-38 lead into the locker room at halftime. 
  
Kansas opened the second half with a 15-3 run to push its lead to 22 points at 63-41 with 16:55 to go after a dunk by Adams. Samford fought back to cut the lead to 13 points at 67-54 with 13:25 remaining following a three-pointer by Allenspach. 
  
The Bulldogs closed to within single digits for the first time in the second half at eight points at 75-67 with 9:04 left after a driving layup by <dfn><a data-airgap-id="55" href="https://samfordsports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/a-j-staton-mccray/8196" rel="smarttag" rev="8196">A.J. Staton-McCray</a></dfn>. Samford cut the lead to one point at 79-78 with 5:14 to go on a layup by Jones. Kansas pushed the lead back out to seven points at 86-79 with 2:52 left. 
  
With Kansas leading, 88-81, Samford went on an 8-2 run to cut the lead to one point again at 90-89 with 20 seconds to go on a three-pointer by Campbell. Samford, however, could not convert the rest of the way and the late Kansas free throws allowed the Jayhawks to hold on for the 93-89 win.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The <a href="https://nabc.com/nabc_releases/2024/nabc-names-division-i-all-district-teams-coaches-of-the-year/">NABC has released the 2023-24 NABC Division I All-District Teams and District Coaches of the Year</a>, with the District 21 teams comprising 10 Southern Conference student-athletes and Samford's Bucky McMillan named the District 21 Coach of the Year. 
  
The All-District honors are voted on by NABC-member coaches across NCAA Division I. 
  
SoCon Player of the Year Vonterius Woolbright of Western Carolina was joined on the all-district first team by Furman's JP Pegues, UNCG duo Mikeal Brown-Jones and Keyshaun Langley and Samford's Achor Achor. 
  
The second team included Mercer's Jalyn McCreary, Samford's Rylan Jones, Chattanooga's Trey Bonham and Honor Huff and Wofford's Corey Tripp. 
  
Langley earned his second straight first-team all-district selection, while Woolbright was a second-team pick last year. 
  
McMillan led Samford to its first outright SoCon regular-season championship this season as well as the Bulldogs' first SoCon tournament title since the program joined the league in 2008. 
  
No. 13 seed Samford, making its first NCAA appearance in 24 years, will take on No. 4 seed Kansas in the first round of the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship on Thursday in Salt Lake City, Utah, at 9:55 p.m. ET on TBS.

NABC names all-district teams, coaches of the year(32093)

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford men's basketball team will travel to Salt Lake City, Utah to take on Kansas on Thursday in the NCAA Tournament, it was announced during the official NCAA Tournament Selection Show Sunday evening on CBS. 
  
"Obviously, I'm very excited for our program to be on the national scene," Samford head coach <a href="https://samfordsports.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/bucky-mcmillan/1639">Bucky McMillan</a> said. "Those that have been following our program know this is a special team. It's a special group of guys, the way they represent our university goes hand in hand with our university, how hard they work, how unselfish they are and the confidence in how they approach their business on a day-to-day basis." 
  
This is Samford's third trip to the NCAA Tournament, having previously gone in 1999 and 2000. This is the first-ever meeting between Samford and Kansas in men's basketball. 
  
Samford has posted the best season in its program history, boasting a record of 29-5 overall and 15-3 in Southern Conference play. The Bulldogs won the SoCon outright regular-season championship for the first time since joining the league in 2008. Samford punched its ticket to the NCAA Tournament with a 76-69 win over ETSU in the championship game of the SoCon Tournament on March 11, in Asheville, N.C. 
  
Samford currently ranks fifth in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 86.0 points per game. The Bulldogs also rank in the top 10 in the nation in bench points per game (5th-33.38 pg.), turnovers forced per game (6th-16.62 pg.), effective field goal percentage (6th-57.3%), three-point percentage (7th-39.3%), fast break points per game (7th-15.26 pg.) and winning percentage (8th-85.3%).
