Southern Conference Announces Winter Academic All-Conference

160 Student-Athletes Earn Recognition for Academic Achievements
SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Southern Conference today announced its Academic All-Conference team for the 2009-10 winter season. 160 student-athletes, representing all 12 Southern Conference institutions, were named to the team.
The 160 student-athletes, which participated in men’s and women’s basketball, wrestling and men’s and women’s indoor track and field recorded a 3.56 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
A pair of student-athletes, UNC Greensboro track athlete Joey Thompson and Georgia Southern women’s basketball player Samantha Williams, boasted perfect 4.0 cumulative GPAs.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must possess at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average entering the winter season and must have competed in at least one-half of their team’s competitions during the recently-concluded winter campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.
The league’s indoor track and field teams supplied the most student-athletes to the team, including 71 women and 33 men. Women’s basketball (32 players) was also well represented. Western Carolina led all schools with 25 honorees followed by Appalachian State (18) and Elon (16).
