Winter Academic All-Conference Team Announced

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Nearly 200 student-athletes earned spots on the Academic All-Southern Conference Team for the 2012-13 winter season, the league office announced Wednesday.

The 177 student-athletes on the team surpassed last year’s winter total by 19. All 12 SoCon institutions were represented on the team, which honored student-athletes from men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, and wrestling.

Eleven student-athletes boast perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point averages, including: Appalachian State’s Debra Domermuth (women’s indoor track and field), Chattanooga’s Rebecca Greenwall (women’s indoor track and field), John Lampe (wrerstling) and Patrick O’Brien (men’s indoor track and field), Western Carolina’s Alex Abraham (women’s basketball), Michaela Birek (women’s indoor track and field), Makenzey Campbell (women’s basketball) and Michelle Provost (women’s indoor track and field) and Wofford’s Katie Kessler (women’s indoor track and field), Justin Whitaker (men’s indoor track and field) and Alissa Williams (women’s indoor track and field).

To be eligible, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA entering the winter season and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams’ competitions during the recently concluded winter campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.

The league’s 12 women’s indoor track and field teams provided the most academic all-conference members with 72, followed by men’s indoor track and field with 52 and women’s basketball with 36.

Among member institutions, Appalachian State led all schools with 28 members on the academic all-conference team. Western Carolina followed with 23, while Samford was third with 18.
