Western Carolina Holds Lead After Day Two

PINEHURST, N.C. – Western Carolina shot a collective 6-under 282 Monday to open up a four-stroke lead over Georgia Southern after two rounds of the 2014 Southern Conference Men’s Golf Championship at the par-72, 7,122-yard National Golf Club. The Catamounts’ J.T. Poston holds a commanding eight-stroke lead in the race for individual medalist honors.

Poston and Georgia Southern’s Scott Wolfes each scorched the course for 6-under 66s on Monday, each matching his career-low round. Poston, ranked 13th nationally, flirted with a clean card until a bogey on the par-3 17th but finished with five birdies and an eagle to move to 10-under 134 for the tournament.

Wolfes, ranked No. 90, did manage the bogey-free round Monday, mixing three birdies on the front nine with a birdie and an eagle on the back nine to vault from a tie for 27th into a tie for fourth at 1-under 143 after two rounds.

Poston holds an eight-stroke lead over the UNCG duo of Carter Jenkins and Roy Dixon, who are tied for second at 2-under 142. Jenkins fired a 2-under 70 on Monday, highlighted by an eagle on the par-4 16th, while Dixon shot a 1-under 71, recovering nicely after bogeys on his second and third holes of the day.

Poston and the Catamounts were tied for first place with Davidson after day one but dropped 12 strokes from their first-round score on day two, firing their best round of the season to finish with the 282. WCU’s Tyler Lail shot a 1-under 71 Monday to move to even-par 144 and sits eighth as the Catamounts have two players inside the top 10.

Georgia Southern’s Will Evans turned in an even-par 72 Monday and sits amidst a four-way tie with his teammate Wolfes, Chattanooga’s Chris Robb and Davidson’s Richard Fountain in fourth place at 1-under 143 for the tournament. The Eagles’ Charlie Martin is tied for ninth at 1-over 145 after Monday’s 2-under 70 and have three players in the top 10. GSU shot 4-under 284 as a team Monday to moved up one spot to second at 4-over 580.

Chattanooga moved from fifth to third, matching GSU’s 284 Monday. The Mocs, paced by Davis’ Bunn’s 5-under 67 in the second round, are 5-over 581 heading into the third round of play. Robb turned in a 3-under 69 Monday.

Davidson’s David Sargent rounds out the individual top 10, as he is tied for ninth with GSU’s Martin at 1-over 145 after his 3-over 75 Monday. Fountain’s 4-under 68 helped him jump from a tie for 15th into the tie for fourth at 143.

UNCG follows Chattanooga in the team standings at 9-over 585 after its 3-under 285 Monday, while Davidson fell to fifth in the team standings, two shots back, with a 5-over 293.

Furman (296-303=599), Wofford (306-303=609), Elon (316-294=610), Samford (314-304=618) and (Appalachian State (310-310=620) complete the team standings. Elon had the biggest turnaround from day one, dropping 26 strokes Monday to move up two spots to eighth.

The second round will tee off at 8 a.m. Tuesday, with Furman, Davidson and UNCG going off of No. 1. Western Carolina, Georgia Southern and Chattanooga tee off at 8:50, while Samford and Appalachian State go off of No. 10 at 8:20 and Wofford and Elon go off the back nine at 9:10.
