GREENSBORO, Ga.
– ETSU completed its wire-to-wire win at the 2021 Southern Conference Men’s Golf Championship on Tuesday at Reynolds Lake Oconee’s par-72, 7,393-yard The Oconee Course, finishing eight shots clear of Western Carolina for its 21st SoCon title and first since 2017. Redshirt freshman Archie Davies shot an even-par 72 in the third round to claim medalist honors for the Bucs, nabbing his first collegiate win.

ETSU, ranked 50th in the latest Golfstat rankings, saw the Catamounts shave three strokes off its day-one lead but had built enough of a cushion in Monday’s first two rounds to still comfortably win the team title. The Bucs were the only team to finish under par in the tournament, finishing at 5-under-par 859 despite Tuesday’s 8-over effort.

Western Carolina, which finished ninth of nine teams in 2019, the last contested SoCon tournament, carded a 3-over 867 for its best finish since a runner-up showing in 1986. The Catamounts posted Tuesday’s low team round of 5-over 293.

Furman finished third at 878, followed by Wofford (882), UNCG (885), Mercer (886), Chattanooga (895) and Samford (918).

Davies became ETSU’s 16th SoCon medalist and third in the last four tournaments with a 9-under 207 for the two-day tournament. The Carlisle, England, native got as low as 13-under Tuesday, opening with four birdies in his first seven holes before playing the final 11 at 4-over to return to even on the day.

The course played tougher Tuesday than in either of the two previous rounds with an average score of 75.42, and just four players turned in sub-par rounds on the day. One of just two players in the field to shoot even Tuesday, Davies lost just one stroke from his day-one lead, finishing three strokes clear of Western Carolina’s Louis Theys, who shot 1-under 71 Tuesday to finish at 6-under 210.

Davies paced three Bucs in the top 10, as Trevor Hulbert finished at even-par 216 to tie for fifth and Jack Rhea was two strokes back at 2-over 218.

Western Carolina had two finish in the top four, as Theys was joined by round-one leader Pierre Viallaneix, who finished at 2-under 214 after Tuesday’s 3-over 75. Catamount Tumi Kuld made the day’s biggest jump, leaping 12 spots into a tie for 19th with one of the four 1-under 71 scores.

SoCon stroke leader and two-time SoCon Player of the Year Keller Harper of Furman finished third at 5-under 211 after Tuesday’s 71. Teammate Mac Scott was involved in a five-way tie for ninth at 4-over 220, turning in a 76 Tuesday after a pair of 72s Monday.

Mercer’s Tyler Copp tied for fifth at even-par 216, turning in a 1-under 71 Tuesday to jump four spots. Martin Plukka tied for ninth at 220.

UNCG’s Randall Hudson and Zack Swanson also tied for ninth, both shooting 74s Tuesday. Wofford’s Walker Jones finished alone in eighth at 3-over 219 and was joined in the top 10 by Matthew Copeland in the tie for ninth.

ETSU’s Shiso Go earned the Pinnacle Award as the student-athlete on the championship-winning team with the highest cumulative GPA.

ETSU will learn its postseason destination when the NCAA selection show airs May 5 on the Golf Channel.
