Appalachian State Sweeps SoCon Indoor Track & Field Championship

CLEMSON, S.C. - The Appalachian State men and women won the 2011 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. The title was the eighth for the Mountaineer men since 2000 and third in a row, and it is the ninth women's title for Appalachian State since 2000.

On the men's side, Appalachian State scored 216.33 points followed by Western Carolina with 149 points in the final standing.  The Mountaineer women tallied 185 points with Western Carolina coming in second place with 110.5 points.   

Sunday began with the conclusion of the men's heptathlon.

Samford sophomore Brandon Bassett broke the men's SoCon heptathlon record with 5,063 points. Bassett took first place in the long jump (6.91m, 22'8") and pole vault (4.55m, 14'11") while finishing second in the 60m hurdles (8.77) and third in the shot put (11.51m, 37'9.25") and high jump (1.96m, 6'5").  He also ran a 7.29 in the 60m dash and completed Sunday's events in the 1000m with a time of 3:09.61.

The Bulldogs took the top two spots in the event with junior Donald Cooper placing second with 4,926 points.  Appalachian State senior Jake Goodchild finished third with 4,770 points.

Western Carolina freshman Tyler Bentley started Sunday's heptathlon events by taking first in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.63.  Basset took top honors in the pole vault while Western Carolina sophomore Luke Burton won the 1,000m with a time of 2:48.61.

In the women's pole vault, Appalachian State freshman Cassandra Crawford claimed first place with a mark of 3.80m (12'5.5").

Western Carolina sophomore Cordell Livingston defended his 60m hurdle title by posting a time of 8.11. On the women's side, Catamount junior Nicole Okolo won event with a time of 8.52.

Sophomore Alex Taylor of Appalachian State won the men's mile run in a time of 4:12.35. For the women, Samford sophomore Lauren D'Alessio won with a time of 4:59.79.

In the men's 60m dash, Appalachian State junior Dennis Moore won the event with a time of 6.79. Breanna Alston, a freshman from Appalachian State, took the top spot for the women with a time of 7.58, which set the mark for the fastest conference time this season.

Brunson Miller, a sophomore at The Citadel, repeated as the men's 400m dash champion with a time of 48.11. Western Carolina senior Jane't Carothers claimed her third straight 400m title, recording a time of 55.34.

In the men's 800m, Davidson freshman Andrew Lantz took first place with a time of 1:54.99. On the women's side, Samford senior Hillary Neal won the 800m by posting a time of 2:10.42.  Defending champion Micah Wessinger from The Citadel finished third a time of 2:12.79.

Appalachian State freshman Jamal Tiller finished first in the men's triple jump with a leap of 15.59m (51'1.75"). Elon's Veronica Day won the women's triple jump with a distance of 12.24m (40'2").

In the men's weight throw that featured the conference record being broken twice, Appalachian State senior Malcolm Styers recorded a mark of 18.96m (62'2.5").  With his conference record throw, Styers claimed his third consecutive weight throw title in the Indoor Championship.   For the women, Appalachian State senior Whitney Smyre won her second weight throw event in three years after posting a mark of 17.92m (58'9.5").

In the men's 200m dash, Appalachian State junior Dennis Moore claimed the top spot by recording a time of 21.62. On the women's side, Mountaineer freshman Breanna Alston took first place with a time of 24.48 while defending champion Carothers from Western Carolina finished in second with a time 24.59.

Appalachian State junior Sean Soderman won the men's 5000m in a time 14:39.59. For the women, the College of Charleston freshman Dena O'Brien broke the 22-year-old conference record in the 5000m with a time of 16.46.59.  After lapping the entire field in the race, O'Brien finished 1:02.55 ahead of the next closest competitor.

The championships concluded with the men's and women's 4x400m. The Citadel men ended Western Carolina's four-year streak by posting a time 3:17.76.  The Citadel were represented by Daniel Till, Christian Graham, Chris Sievert and Brunson Miller.  Western Carolina women won the 4x400m for the fifth consectutive year.  Competing for the women were Felisha Garren, Shalyn McMichael, Felicia Paulding and Jane't Carothers who recorded a time of 3:50.35.
