Samford leads Indoor Track & Field Championships
Bulldogs looking to defend both men’s and women’s titles

LEXINGTON, Va. – Samford’s men and women lead the Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships after Saturday’s first day of competition at the VMI Corps Physical Training Facility. Three meet records fell on the day.
Samford’s men totaled 57 points on day one to hold an eight-point lead over Western Carolina as they try to win their third straight championship. The Bulldog women enjoy a much wider margin, as they totaled 80.5 points, well ahead of second-place Furman’s 35, all of which were accrued in the final two events.
The Samford men claimed a pair of titles on Saturday. The Bulldog women, seeking their sixth straight team title, grabbed an event win, as well, with Brittany Bishop clearing 4.06 meters in the pole vault to edge the former meet record of 4.05 meters set by Samford’s Claire Goodson in 2012. Bishop’s heroics led the way for a 1-5 Samford finish in the event as the Bulldogs bagged 32.5 points in that event alone.
The other two records that fell Saturday belong to the Furman Paladins. Carson Williams picked up the first one with his win in the 3,000-meter run, finishing in 8:02.87 to easily surpass the 40-year-old mark of 8:05.37 set by ETSU’s Seamus Power.
Furman’s women’s distance medley relay squad earned the Paladins’ second record of the day in the final event of the day, as Megan Marvin, Monica Seitz, Nicole Matysik and Bethany Graham turned in a time of 11:31.56 to smash the record of 11:39.35 set by Furman in 2019.
Among other highlights of the day, Samford’s Justin Stuckey won his third straight SoCon indoor high jump title. A first-team All-American in the event last season, the senior from Helena, Alabama, cleared 2.10 meters to pace four Bulldogs who scored in the event, banking 21 team points.
Samford added 16 points in the shot put, with Seth Wolfe claiming the title with a heave of 15.62 meters. Teammate and two-time defending champion Matt Cahoon finished third.
Western Carolina made hay in the long jump, picking up 23 points in the event to Samford’s 13. Javell Brown won the title with a leap of 7.32 meters, while his brother, Javon, finished fourth behind another Catamount, Tyler Rodriguez.
After Furman claimed 26 points and five of the top eight spots in the 3,000m, led by Williams’s record-breaking effort, ETSU cruised to a comfortable win in the distance medley relay, with Evan Guzman, Miguel Parrilla, Phelani Maduwa and Matt Scarr posting a time of 9:51.15 to finish nearly eight seconds before runner-up Furman.
The pentathlon was the first event of the day to go final, with Wofford’s Netanya Linares taking the first gold medal of the weekend with a total of 3,673 points, edging Samford’s Mia Milasinovic, who scored 3,626. Two duo combined to win every event, with Linares claiming the 60-meter hurdles, high jump and long jump and Milasinovic winning the shot put and 800-meter run.
The Bulldogs saw four score in the pentathlon, with Erin Long joining Milasinovic on the podium in third, to jump out to the early 21-11 team advantage.
The lead grew from there. In addition to its domination of the pole vault, Samford collected 17 points in the shot put, including a pair of podium finishes from Hannah Daffin and Emma Nolte, but it was The Citadel’s Carisma Holland who claimed the title with a throw of 14.23 meters.
Samford’s huge lead came without the benefit of a single scorer in the long jump. Western Carolina saw Makaila McIntyre successfully defend her 2021 title with a leap of 5.88 meters, while Wofford claimed 17 points in the event, highlighted by Madeline McNinch’s runner-up finish.
Furman won its sixth title in eight years in the 3,000m, with defending champion Madelynne Cadeau using a late burst to edge ETSU’s Lindsey Stallworth for the crown in 9:36.26. Furman’s Emily Little joined Cadeau on the podium, while the Paladins also claimed fourth and fifth to nab 25 points in the event.
