ASU's Men and Women Lead After First Day

Clemson, S.C.?Appalachian State men’s and women’s teams lead after the first day of competition at the Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.  Appalachian State’s men’s team has 102.50 points, followed by Western Carolina in second with 84 points.  Chattanooga is in third with 13 points, followed by The Citadel with 12.5 points.  UNC Greensboro, Davidson and Furman round out the men’s field.

 

Appalachian State’s women’s team is first after day one of competition with 56 points.  They are followed closely by Georgia Southern with 52 points.  Western Carolina is in third with 37 points and Chattanooga is in fourth with 36 points.  The Citadel, Elon, College of Charleston and Davidson round out the rest of the women’s teams.

 

The first day of the men’s heptathlon saw Matt Evans of Western Carolina score 2,898 points. He leads his teammate Sean Reardon by 447 points.  Reardon leads Matt Boruff of Appalachian State by three points followed by David Gift of Western Carolina and Brian Baize of The Citadel. Caleb Moore of The Citadel, Barron Shell and Jose Trinidad round out the rest of the field. 

 

The women’s pentathlon saw Melanie Trumbo of Georgia Southern win the event with a score of 3,248 points.  She defeated Latcha Sanders of The Citadel by 38 points.  Kiara Crutchfield of Appalachian placed third with 3,166 points.

 

Brittani Williams, the Southern Conference runner of the week for February 13, won the women’s shot put with a throw of 48-03.50.  Williams’ margin of victory over her closest competitors was five feet.  Jennifer Charles of Georgia Southern placed second and Latcha Sanders of The Citadel finished third.

 

The Lady Mocs swept the women’s 3,000-meters.  Shelley Taylor crossed the finish line with a time of 10:05.02 followed closely be her teammate Kathleen Turchin who ran 10:05.12.  Sabrina Lefort placed third with a time of 10:07.23 to make it a clean sweep for the Lady Mocs.

 

The Mountaineers placed first and third in the men’s 3,000-meters.  The 2007 cross country champion Brian Deal won the event with a time of 8:27.41.  Chattanooga’s Michael Mentz placed second with a time of 8:29.81, followed closely behind by Appalachian State’s Phillip Mitchell with a time of 8:34.05.

 

Vonteena Knotts of Appalachian State won the women’s long jump with a leap of 19-00.75.  Vonteena already has an NCAA automatic qualifying jump of 20-10.5 which she accomplished at a meet earlier in the season.  Shaunta Hamilton placed second with a jump of 18-09 and Bianca Harvey of Appalachian State jumped 18-05.25 to place third.

 

Patrick Morris of Western Carolina won the men’s shot put with a throw of 50-03.25 besting his previous throw of 49.03.75, which he threw early in the season.  Wes Kiser of Appalachian State placed second with a throw of 49-10 and Cale McDaniel came in third with a throw of 49-04.

 

The Catamount high jumpers swept the event with three athletes all jumping 6-04.75.  Daniel Joseph won the event based on fewest misses.  Joseph was followed by teammates Rashad Herndon and Matt Evans.

 

The Mountaineers took all three places in the men’s long jump with Joel Gaddy taking first place with a jump of 23-01.75.  His teammates Ricky Harris and Mark Sturgis were second and third respectively.

 

The Appalachian State placed first and third in the men’s pole vault.  Mike Wilson vaulted 15-05 to win the event.  Mike O’Steen of Western Carolina and Barron Shell of Appalachian State tied with a vault of 15-01, but Mike O’Steen placed second due to fewest misses.

 

In the men’s 200-meters Manteo Mitchell of Western Carolina ran an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 21.48.  Manteo’s time is the fastest 200-meter time ran in qualifying.

 

Jessika Johnson of Western Carolina won the women’s high jump with a jump of 5-05.25.  Rebecca Hazeltine and Melanie Trumbo tied for second place with a jump of 5-04.25.

 

The team of Savery, Lane, Bailey and Isaccs of Western Carolina won the distance medley relay with a time of 12:09.60.  Chattanooga and Appalachian State ran neck and neck down the straightaway, but Chattanooga squeezed out second place with a time of 12:23.71.  Appalachian State placed third with a time of 12:24.42.

 

The men’s distance medley relay was won by the team of Sam Mordecai, Nick Zeller, Andrew Yarchin and anchored by Josh Houser of Appalachian State with a time of 10:18.42.  UNC Greensboro placed second with a time of 10:19.95 and Western Carolina came in third with a time of 10:25.99.
