Samford Men, Appalachian State Women Lead After Day One

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - At the conclusion of day one of the 2011 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, host Samford leads on the men's side with 82.5 points while Appalachian State takes the early lead on the women's side with 49 points.
Friday began with four women's heptathlon and half of the men's decathlon events.
In the women's heptathlon, five different athletes from four different schools took top honors in the opening day events. Samford senior Morgan Tyler took first place in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.24. Seniors Isabel Boersma from College of Charleston and Shaunta Hamilton from Georgia Southern both cleared 5'05" (1.65m) in the high jump to tie for first. In the third event of the day, The Citadel's Adriana Love recorded a distance of 39'07.25" (12.07m) in the shot put while Georgia Southern's freshman Stephanie Hicks placed second with a mark of 37'02.25" (11.33m). At the end of the first day's heptathlon events, Hamilton ran the 200m in a time of 25.26 to win the event.
At the conclusion of four events in the heptathlon, Boersma leads with 2,981 points with Hicks (2,955) in second followed by the Cougars' Brynne Johnson (2,814). The heptathlon will wrap up tomorrow morning with the long jump, javelin and 800m.
In the first of five decathlon events, Samford's Donald Cooper won the 110m dash with a time of 10.89 and the 800m in a time of 50.27. Cooper also took first in the high jump with a height of 6'05.5" (1.97m). In the long jump, Samford sophomore Brandon Bassett took first with a leap of 22'09" (6.93m). The lone athlete to win a decathlon event not from Samford on the opening day was Appalachian State senior Jake Goodchild, who placed first in the shot put with a toss of 42'04.25" (12.91m).
After first day of the decathlon events, Samford sits in the top two positions with Basset in first with 3,670 points followed by Cooper (3,659). Goodchild rounds out the top three with 3,585 points. The men's decathlon will conclude tomorrow with the 110m hurdles, pole vault, javelin and 1,500m.
In the women's javelin, freshman Megan Morton from Western Carolina won with a throw of 140'01" (42.71m). Samford freshman Shelby Builta placed second (132'07") and Appalachian State sophomore Deanne Tiplady came in third (129'0"). Defending champion Justine Robertson from Elon finished fifth this year with a mark of 122'09" (37.41m).
In the hammer throw, Appalachian State's Malcolm Styers repeated as the men's conference championship with a mark of 191'04" (58.31m). Samford senior Kyle Kirby and Appalachian State senior Timothy Daly finished second and third with throws of 189'10" (57.87m) and 184'05" (56.21m), respectively.
On the women's side, Western Carolina's Zakiyyah Stewart defended her hammer throw title with a mark of 171'0" (52.12m). Appalachian State took the remaining spots on the podium with distances of 161'05" (49.20m) from sophomore Gayshawna Watkins and 160'03" (48.84m) from senior Norjai Palma.
In the men's long jump, sophomore Lawren Willard from Western Carolina took first place with a leap of 23'05.5" (7.15m). Willard finished fourth last season in the long jump. Davidson's Stewart Dalton placed second with a mark of 22'05.25" (6.84m) and Wofford's Mike McCrimon took third with a distance of 22'05" (6.83m).
The women's long jump finished with all seniors on the podium with Georgia Southern's Shaunta Hamilton taking first followed by Veronica Day from Elon and Bianca Harvey from Appalachian State. Hamilton won the long jump with a mark 19'08" (5.99m), Day took second with a distance of 19'04.75" (5.91m) and Harvey jumped 18'10.5" (5.75m) for third.
In the men's pole vault, Samford swept the top three spots with junior Michael Seaman taking first, defending champion senior Patrick Wells placing second and freshman Owen Wagoner earning third. Seaman and Wells both cleared 16'06.75" (5.05m) but Seaman took first due to fewer attempts at previous heights. Wagoner's third place mark was 15'11" (4.95m).
Along with the pole vault, the Samford men swept the javelin with Thomas Oliver winning with a throw of 208'10" (63.65m), Brandon Basset coming in second with a mark of 197'08" (60.25m) and Ryland Robbins taking third with a distance of 191'06" (58.38m).
The final field event of the day ended with Appalachian State junior Darius Purcell winning the men's high jump with a height of 6'10.75" (2.10m). The Citadel's James Harris finished in second and Samford's Tyler Kemp finished third both with marks of 6'8.75" (2.05m).
In the women's 3,000m steeplechase, junior Kristen Wolfe from College of Charleston took first place with a time of 10:42.85. Elon sophomore Emily Tryon and senior Emily Fournier finished second and third with times of 10:53.86 and 10:59.38, respectively.
On the men's side, Appalachian State's Sean Soderman ran a time 8:56.82 to win the 3,000m steeplechase while Samford's Blaise Caire (8:59.08) placed second and the Mountaineers' Chris Moen (9:13.96) finished third.
Friday's events ended with the men's and women's 10,000m run under the lights at Samford's Track and Soccer Stadium. Chattanooga's Chris Berry took top honors for the men with a time of 30:42.38. Behind Berry was Davidson's Ryan Hopkins (30:42.77) in second and Chattanooga's Emmanuel Kirwa in third (30:44.51).
For the women, Furman's Chloe Kowalski passed Samford's Jillian Klassen on the final lap to win with a time of 36.40.96. Klassen's time of 36:46.88 was good for second while Appalachian State's Amy Neilson (36:53.70) finished third.
Preliminary trials were also held Friday in the men's and women's 100m and 200m dash, 400m and 800m run, the women's 100m hurdles and the men's and women's 400m hurdles.
In the 100m and 200m dash, Appalachian State freshman Breanna Alston led all women with times of 11.89 and 24.18. Western Carolina's Felicia Paulding, last season's winner in both events, qualified fourth in the 100m with a time of 11.92 and fifth in the 200m with a time of 24.74.
Leading the way for the men in the events, Appalachian State junior Dennis Moore ran a qualifying time of 10.34 in the 100m and a 21.34 in the 200m. Landon Powell, the defending champion in both events from Appalachian State finished second in the 100m (10.48) and fifth in the 200m (21.75).
In the women's 400m run, Western Carolina's Felisha Garren, who finished second in last season's championship in the event, led all heats with a time of 55.11. On the men's side, defending champion Brunson Miller from The Citadel ran the fastest qualifying time of 47.99.
In the women's 800m, Samford senior Hillary Neal paced the way with a time of 2:09.95. On the men's side, 2010 champion Drew Tucker from Western Carolina led all qualifiers with a time of 1:52.12.
In the women's 100m hurdles prelims, last year's winner Nicole Okolo from Western Carolina ran a 13.66 to lead all qualifiers.
In the 400m hurdles, Appalachian State's Chenel McFadden led the women with a time of 1:02.23, and Western Carolina's Cordell Livingston's 52.97 was the fastest men's time.
Sunday's events begin at 9:30 a.m. CT with the completion of the men's heptathlon and the women's heptathlon at 10:30 a.m.
