Outdoor track & field specialty awards announced
Samford claims four of eight awards after championship sweep

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford claimed four of the eight Southern Conference outdoor track and field individual awards between its men’s and women’s programs in a vote of the league’s head coaches following the SoCon Outdoor Track and Field Championships earlier this week. The Bulldogs swept the team titles, with the men winning their fifth crown and the women their sixth.
Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes or themselves.
Samford’s Hannah Daffin claimed her second straight women’s Most Outstanding Field Performer honor, while the Bulldogs’ Cagan Campbell was named the men’s Most Outstanding Track Performer and Eli Penix was tabbed the men’s Freshman of the Year. Samford coach Rod Tiffin was named the men’s Coach of the Year.
Wofford claimed a pair of women’s awards, with Kerrington Johnson earning most Outstanding Track Performer honors and Johnny Bomar being named Coach of the Year.
The Citadel’s Solomon Ghosh was voted the men’s Most Outstanding Field Performer and Western Carolina’s Jasmine Greene was tabbed the women’s Freshman of the Year.
For the second straight season, Daffin scored 24 points at the meet, most among field performers. The senior from Mobile, Alabama, successfully defended a pair of titles, winning the hammer throw on Monday and the shot put on Tuesday, both for the second year in a row. She also finished fifth in the discus for the third straight season. Samford has now won the women’s most outstanding field performer each of the last six times it has been presented and eight times overall.
Campbell, who paced the men’s championship with 25 points to earn Most Outstanding Athlete honors, won four titles Tuesday. The graduate student from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, got his day started with a win in the 4x100-meter relay, running the anchor leg. Later that afternoon, he became Samford’s first-ever SoCon champion in the men’s 400-meter dash and after that, he added a title in the 200-meter dash. He capped his day with a title in the 4x400-meter relay, again running the anchor leg. Campbell claims Samford’s third men’s Most Outstanding Track Performer honor and the first since Brandon Hazouri earned consecutive honors in 2013 and 2014.
Wofford’s Johnson scored 24.5 points on the track en route to earning Most Outstanding Track Performer honors. The senior from Anderson, South Carolina, won three titles and set a pair of program records Tuesday. She opened the final day of the meet by running the leadoff leg of Wofford’s 4x100-meter relay. About 40 minutes later, she claimed her third straight SoCon title in the 100-meter hurdles. Later in the afternoon, she completed the hurdles sweep, winning her second career title in the 400-meter hurdles, winning in a school-record time of 1:01.13. She capped her day with another program record, this time running the third leg on the Terriers’ 4x400-meter relay, which finished in second place in 3:46.67. Johnson is Wofford’s second women’s Most Outstanding Track Performer and first since 2019.
Ghosh becomes The Citadel’s first-ever men’s Most Outstanding Field Performer after totaling 20 points at the meet. The graduate student from Blacksburg, Virginia, opened his meet with a third-place finish in the hammer throw Monday. On Tuesday, he won his second straight title in the discus throw before adding a fifth-place finish in the shot put later in the afternoon.
Samford’s Penix led all SoCon freshmen with 16 points scored at the conference championship. The rookie from Gray, Tennessee, turned in a pair of podium finishes in his first SoCon outdoor meet, taking second place in both the discus and shot put on Tuesday and earning All-Freshman honors in both events. He is Samford’s second men’s Freshman of the Year in the last three seasons and the Bulldogs’ fifth overall.
Western Carolina’s Greene scored 15 points at the SoCon meet and earned All-Freshman honors in all three of her events. The Huntersville, North Carolina, native led a 1-2 Catamount finish in the triple jump Tuesday, winning just the third title for the program in the event all-time. Greene also turned in a fourth-place finish in the long jump Monday in addition to running in the 100-meter dash prelims. Greene is Western Carolina’s seventh Freshman of the Year and first since 2017.
Samford’s Tiffin was named the men’s coach of the year for the third straight season and eighth time overall after leading his squad to its third consecutive title. The Bulldogs scored 251 points, their most ever at the SoCon Outdoor Track and Field Championships, and claimed 12 of the 21 event titles, en route to a 118-point margin of victory over runner-up Western Carolina. Two Bulldog men set championship records, with Ty Kimberlin setting a new standard in the decathlon with 7,233 points and Titus Moore breaking his own record in the 110-meter hurdles with his time of 13.87 seconds.
Wofford’s Bomar earned his second women’s Coach of the Year award and first since 2019. The 12th-year skipper led the Terrier women to their third runner-up finish in the last four championships, with Wofford scoring a program-record 134 points. Wofford’s women claimed four titles, with Netanya Linares winning the heptathlon in addition to Johnson’s hurdles sweep and the 4x100-meter relay win.
