Samford Claims Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Titles

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Samford Bulldogs swept the 2014 Southern Conference Outdoor Championships, taking home both the men’s and women’s team titles on Sunday to earn their first SoCon outdoor track and field title since joining the league in 2008.
Samford head coach Rod Tiffin was named men’s and women’s Coach of the Year, and Steven Bastien was named the men’s Most Outstanding Athlete. Fellow Bulldogs Brandon Hazouri and Sidney Jordan earned men’s Most Outstanding Track Performer and Most Outstanding Field Performer, respectively, while Emily Allen was selected as the women’s Most Outstanding Field Performer. Georgia Southern’s Jasmin Walker was selected as the women’s Most Outstanding Track Performer and the Most Outstanding Athlete for her efforts over the weekend.
Appalachian State’s Nathan Milch was chosen as the men’s Freshman of the Year, while Chattanooga’s Teghan Henderson took home the women’s Freshman of the Year award.
On the men’s side, Samford finished with 207 points, narrowly edging out Western Carolina, who finished the meet with 204 points. Appalachian State (165.5) finished third, followed by The Citadel (91) and Furman (55) in fourth and fifth, respectively.
The Samford women earned the win with 166.5 points, while WCU’s women’s team took second with 155 points. Elon scored 131 points to finish third, while Appalachian State (126) and Elon (117.5) took fourth and fifth.
The Bulldogs scored first place finished in the men’s and women’s multi events, as Steven Bastien took first in the decathlon with 6,591 points and Ashley Cope won the heptathlon with 4,806 points. Bastien won the 100 meters, 400 meters, 110 meter hurdles and long jump to help earn the decathlon win. Cope posted wins in the 100 meter hurdles and shot put, as well as second place finishes in the 200 meters and high jump to earn her fourth consecutive win in the heptathlon.
Georgia Southern’s 4x100 meter relay team of Alyssa Felton, Jasmin Walker, Ariana Tipton and Jordan Fordham set a new SoCon record at 44.50 to claim a first place finish. The Eagles posted a first place finish in the 4x400 meter relay, as Dana Edwards, Asha Stegall, Cherelle King and Kimberly Thomas finished in 3:43, just .49 ahead of Appalachian State.
Appalachian State was the winner of the men’s 4x100 meter relay. Antonio Marcano, Jr., William Buckley, Clay Allen and Marshall McRae ran a 40.62 to take the title. Western Carolina’s team of Earl Rahming, Aaron Harris, Demari Boswell and Adrian Ortado ran a 3:13.01 to win the 4x400 meter relay.
Hazouri led a Samford sweep in the 1500 meters, crossing the line in 3:54.33, just ahead of teammates Adam Jones and Layton Dorsett. Davidson’s Sarah Paddon was the top finisher in the women’s 1,500, as she posted a winning time of 4:24.54.
Rahming earned his second first place finish of the day in the 400 meters, finishing first with a mark of 47.21. Elon’s Bria Bell was the winner of the women’s 400 with a time of 53.95.
Samford’s Justin Emerson blazed a 10.47 to take the men’s 100-meter dash and Western Carolina’s Tayla Carter took the women’s 100 with an 11.59. Catamount Marquis Bailey posted a 14.59 to secure the win in the men’s 110 meter hurdles. Sydney Griffin of Elon won the women’s 110 meter hurdles with a time of 13.83.
Hazouri added another win for his second victory of the day, running the 800 meters in 1:50.31, while fellow Bulldog Marie Demedicis won the women’s 800 with a mark of 2:08.53.
Western Carolina took the top three spots in the 400 meter hurdles, with Abraham Faison crossing first in 52.18. Teammates Eric Blake and Marquis Bailey finished second and third, respectively. Elon claimed its second hurdles win, as Jennifer Esposito won the women’s 400 hurdles. Esposito finished with a time of 59.60.
A 21.59 finish gave The Citadel’s Jamaal Brantley the win in the 200 meters, while Carter scored her second win of the day with a win in the women’s 200.
Freshman Brock Baker of Furman won the men’s 5,000 meters with a time of 14:57.72, edging out teammate Tripp Hurt by just .08 seconds. Henderson was the winner in the women’s 5,000, finishing in 17:00.62.
Jordan was the winner of the men’s discus throw, posting a mark of 48.32 (158-06). Jordan was edged out by Milch in the shot put, as Milch threw a 15.81m (51-10) to earn the win. Appalachian State’s Brianna Tate was the winner of the women’s shot put with a throw of 14.61m (47-11 ¼), while Elon’s Branna Warren won the women’s discus with a mark of 46.68m (153-02).
Appalachian State freshman Samuel Allen cleared 2.03m (6-08) to win the men’s high jump and teammate Jamal Tiller posted a mark of 15.06m (49-05.00) to win the triple jump. Elon’s Megan Kirshchling took the women’s high jump, clearing 1.79m (5-10 ½), and Samford’s Allen was the winner of the women’s triple jump at 12.49m (40-11 ¾).
