JOHNSON CITY TENN. – Furman scored a goal in the first four minutes of the contest as the fourth-seeded Paladins took down the&nbsp; No. 2 seed ETSU, 2-0, on Sunday in Johnson City, Tennessee, to claim the Southern Conference Men’s Soccer Championship.The win represents the Paladins’ 15th SoCon Men’s Soccer Championship, the first since 2018.With the win, Furman claims the SoCon’s automatic bid to the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship. The NCAA Selection Show will air on NCAA.com on Monday at 1 p.m.Christian Kraus scored the opening goal of the game, the eventual game-winning score, in the fourth minute to put Furman on the board. The forward found the bottom left corner of the net for the score, off an assist from Wilfer Bustamante.In the 70th minute of play, Caleb Johnson scored the Paladins’ second goal with an assist from Lloyd Wamu-Snell.The Paladins outshot the Buccaneers, 15-9, while both teams recorded five corner kicks and three saves.Tournament MOP Aaron Salinas played all 90 minutes of the game in the goal for the Paladins, leading the defense that kept ETSU scoreless. Mercer dominated possession in the first 20 minutes of the match and put up three shots in the early going. However, Furman was able to score the first goal of the night in the 20th&nbsp;minute to take an early lead.&nbsp;

SPARTANBURG, S.C.&nbsp;– After sharing the SoCon regular-season title, ETSU and UNCG claimed three of the four individual awards including Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, and Freshman of the Year. UNCG’s Yoshiya Okawa earned Player of the Year, and Issah Haruna was tabbed Freshman of the Year. ETSU’s Allen Vital was selected as the Coach of the Year. Furman’s Aaron Salinas rounded out the individual awards as the Goalkeeper of the Year. The Spartans, picked to finish fifth this season in the preseason poll, went 10-2-4 (3-1-1 SoCon) to garner their third regular season title in the last four years. ETSU was picked first in the poll and won their second consecutive regular season championship. &nbsp; The league’s six coaches also named two all-conference teams and an all-freshman squad. This season’s all-conference first and second teams include 11 student athletes, the all-freshman team has 12 student-athletes due to a tie in the voting. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players or themselves. &nbsp;Furman led all squads earning 10 selections on the postseason teams, including four players on the all-conference first team. UNCG featured eight total selections, while ETSU, Mercer, and Wofford followed with five selections each. VMI rounded out the squads with one student athlete represented. Okawa led UNCG offensively this season, contributing a total of 20 points over the course of 15 games. The Tokyo, Japan, native scored eight goals, three of which were game-winning, and added four assists, while starting 12 games for the Spartans. The senior midfielder led the SoCon in points (20) and goals (8) scored this season and was tied for first in game-winning goals (3). &nbsp; Salinas played over 1200 minutes in goal for the Paladins this season, starting in 14 of 16 games. The Grand Prairie, Texas, product averaged 1.08 goals against this season, with 35 total saves for a save percentage of 70 percent. The sophomore also logged three shutouts this season against Davidson, Presbyterian, and Wofford. Issah, who is also an all-freshman and All-SoCon second-team selection, recorded nine points on three goals and three assists. The midfielder from Bolgatanga, Ghana, started in 11 of his 15 appearances for the Spartans. ETSU’s Vital was tabbed the league’s Coach of the Year. Vital led ETSU to a 5-6-4 overall record and a 3-1-1 conference record in his first season as head coach for the Buccaneers, whose co-regular season championship is their second consecutive title. ETSU defender Louie Salkeld earned a spot on the second team. Salkeld tallied six points on one goal and four assists. Midfielders Oliver Einarsson, Ulysses Hendriks, and Ingvar Kolbjornsen rounded out the ETSU players earning postseason honors, with each earning spots on the all-freshman team. Furman had ten selections this season, with forward Christian Kraus and defenders Ivan Agyaakwah and Slade Starnes joining Aaron Salinas on the first team. Forwards Wilfer Bustamante and Lloyd-Wamu Snell as well as midfielder Luke Hutzell all earned a spot on the second team. Bustamante, Hutzell, and defender Ryan Wagner clinched spots on the all-freshman team. Kraus registered five goals and three assists for a team-leading 13 points, while Agyaakwah added 11 points on four goals and three assists for the Paladins this season. Starnes concluded the season with one goal and four assists to contribute six points. Bustamante and Wamu-Snell both scored four goals on the season, with Bustamante logging an assist and two Player of the Week wins. Wamu-Snell got two assists while Hutzell was credited with three. The Paladins earned the No. 4 seed in the SoCon Championship. &nbsp; Mercer had five selections this season as midfielder Carlos Santamaria and defender Sekou Agard were selected to the first team. Forward Barzee Blama and goalkeeper Trevor McMullen joined the second team. Forward Aaron Pondeca was voted to the all-freshman team. Santamaria racked up 13 points this season on three goals and a league-leading seven assists, while Agard finished the season with 10 points on five goals. Blama scored five goals and dished out two assists for 12 points this year while McMullen lead the conference and was tied for third in the NCAA with eight shutouts this season. &nbsp; UNCG forward Arnaud Tattevin and midfielder Jack Birch join Okawa on the first team. Forward Enzo Dovlo, midfielder Issah Haruna, and defender Daniel Longo earned second-team all-conference distinction. Haruna and defender Mohammed Sumaila earned a place on the all-freshman squad. Tattevin contributed 16 points on seven goals and two assists while Birch logged two goals and two assists. Dovlo had five goals and four assists this season, Haruna had three goals and three assists, and Longo scored a goal and made one assist. The Spartans will be the No. 1 seed in the SoCon Championship. &nbsp; VMI’s forward Anthony Huang was voted to the all-freshman squad after collecting 14 points during the season off four goals and six assists.&nbsp; Terrier midfielder Paul Jones represents Wofford on the all-conference first team. Wofford had two players earn spots on the second team, and two earn spots on the all-freshman team. Midfielder Jakob Andersson and defender Bryce Peacock earned second-team honors. Andersson tallied five assists this season and Peacock scored a goal. Goalkeeper Leo Ledin and midfielder Kalle Rahbek rounded out the all-freshman team. The Terriers went 7-6-2 and 3-2-0 in the SoCon to earn the No. 3 seed. &nbsp; No. 4 seed Furman will play No. 5 seed Mercer in the SoCon Men’s Soccer Championship quarterfinals on Friday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. in Greensboro, North Carolina, while No. 3 seed Wofford and No. 6 seed VMI play the same day at 2 p.m. in Johnson City, Tennessee. No. 1 seed UNCG will play the winner of Furman and Mercer and No. 2 seed ETSU will play the winner of Wofford and VMI. The semifinal matches will take place on Sunday, Nov. 10, with both matches scheduled for 2 p.m. The championship match will take place on Saturday, Nov. 16, or Sunday, Nov. 17, at the highest remaining seed. SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG forward Enzo Dolvo and ETSU defender Hubert Deragon have been named the Southern Conference men’s soccer offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition on Oct. 29-Nov. 4.&nbsp;Dovlo scored the game-winning goal for the Spartans on Saturday in a 3-2 win over ETSU, which clinched a share of the SoCon Regular Season Championship. With the win, UNCG also clinched the top seed for the conference tournament. The Strasbourg, France, native finished the game with three points, having assisted on a goal earlier in the game. The sophomore forward played 80 minutes of the match, taking two shots during his time on the pitch.Deragon scored a goal and had an assist in Saturday’s match with UNCG. The Quebec City, Canada, product assisted on the Bucs’ first goal in the 36th minute of the game before netting his first goal as a Buccaneer in the 74th minute of the game, putting &nbsp;ETSU back within one goal of UNCG.UNCG (10-2-4, 3-1-1 SoCon) will play the winner of No. 4 Furman and No. 5 Mercer in the semifinals of the conference tournament on Sunday in Greensboro, North Carolina. SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG has clinched the No. 1 seed in the upcoming 2024 Southern Conference Men’s Soccer Championship after defeating ETSU, 3-2, on Saturday night. The two teams finished as co-regular season champions. The Spartans, who were predicted to finish third in the preseason poll, posted a 3-1-1 league mark this season to claim their third regular season title in the last four years. The Bucs were picked fifth in the preseason poll after winning the regular season in 2023. They went 3-1-1 as well this season. The tournament opens with the quarterfinal round on Friday, Nov. 8, with the semifinal round set for Nov. 10, both hosted by top-seeded UNCG and No. 2 seed ETSU. The championship will be played at the highest remaining seed on Saturday, Nov. 11, or Sunday, Nov. 12.UNCG is led on offense by Yoshiya Okawa and Arnaud Tattevin, Okawa with seven goals and Tattevin with six, and on defense by goalkeeper Cole Tim Baerwalde who posted three shutouts in conference play. Clemson took ten shots in the first half while also having 53 percent of the possession. Out of those 10 shots taken,&nbsp;<a href="https://woffordterriers.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/leo-ledin/8883">Leo Ledin</a>&nbsp;made four saves, holding the top scoring offense in the nation in check. In the 42nd minute a penalty was issued to Wofford, which gave Clemson a penalty kick. Clemson would capitalize on the opportunity to make the score 1-0 heading into the second half.&nbsp;<a href="https://vmikeydets.com/news/2024/10/29/mens-soccer-keydets-stumped-by-royals-at-home.aspx" target="_self">Queens 3, VMI 0</a>VMI Men's Soccer dropped its final non-league match to Queens (NC) at Patchin Field Tuesday afternoon. SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman forward Wilfer Bustamante and UNCG defender Emmanuel Haga have been named the Southern Conference men’s soccer offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition Oct. 22-28.&nbsp;&nbsp;Bustamante scored in both matches this week as the Paladins posted a 1-0-1 record. In a 2-0 victory over Wofford, the Greenville, S.C., native netted the game winning goal in the 53rd minute of the game. In a 1-1 draw at ETSU, the freshman forward scored Furman’s only goal to keep the Paladins in the running for a regular season championship.&nbsp;Hagan played 180 minutes in the Spartans’ backfield this week as the team went 2-0 against UNC Wilmington and VMI. The Accra, Ghana, product was part of the defense that held UNC Wilmington to one goal on the way to a 3-1 victory, then helped produce a shutout against VMI, UNCG’s seventh of the season.&nbsp;UNCG (9-2-4, 2-1-1 SoCon) hosts ETSU on Saturday. With UNC Greensboro being ranked 21st in RPI this season, the win is the highest ranked win for the Terriers at Snyder Field since 2013 against No.16 Elon (2-1). This is also the first win against UNC Greensboro since 2018.&nbsp;The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team&shy;&shy; fell 3-2 to the Wofford Terriers in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action on Saturday night at Snyder Field. Wofford scored three goals in just over 12 minutes to snap UNCG's impressive nine-game unbeaten streak. VMI still searches for their first conference win while Furman nabs three points with the victory. SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer forward Kadeem Agard and UNCG goalkeeper Tim Baerwalde have been named the Southern Conference men’s soccer offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition Oct. 8-14.&nbsp;Agard logged a hat trick to account for all of Mercer’s goals in a 3-0 victory against VMI on Saturday, Oct. 12. The senior from Snellville, Georgia, scored in the fourth, 55th, and 79th minutes of the game for the first hat trick by a Bear since 2021. With his performance, Agard is now tied for second in the SoCon in goals (4).Baerwalde made his debut with the Spartans on Saturday, facing 13 shots, three of which were on target, in a 1-0 victory over Furman. The Frankfurt, Germany, native made three saves to record a clean sheet, the fourth of his collegiate career.
