Furman Wins Men's Tennis Championship

No. 2 Furman 4, No. 4 Chattanooga 2

 

CHARLESTON, S.C. ? Second seeded Furman won its 12th Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Championship with a 4-2 victory over fourth seeded Chattanooga Saturday afternoon at the Earle Tennis Center on the campus of The Citadel.

 

Furman grabbed the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, as Brian Crook and Bo Ladyman registered an 8-2 victory over Michael Hangstefer and Ryan Fitzgerald at the No. 2 position, while Andy Juc and Scott Kahler were 8-5 winners over Badr Bouabdellah and Arytom Vlasenko at the No. 3.

 

In singles play, Furman solidified victories at the No. 1, 2 and 6 positions to clinch the match. Senior Ben Pauluhn battled to a 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 win over Chattanooga’s Ryan Fitzgerald at the No. 1 position to close out the match for Furman.

 

Tournament Most Valuable Player and SoCon Freshman of the Year Andy Juc defeated Artyom Vlasenko 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2 position and Chris Gilli defeated Josh Bales at No. 6 to help Furman to its first tournament title since 2001.

 

With the win, Furman receives the Southern Conference’s automatic bid to the 2006 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships set to begin on May 12. Furman will learn its fate when the seedings are announced May 3.
