#1 Furman 4, #9 Davidson 0
BURLINGTON,N.C.? The top-seeded Furman men’s tennis team advance to Saturday’s semifinals of the 2009 Southern Conference men’s tennis championships with a 4-0 victory over Davidson Friday morning. The Paladins improve to 20-7 on the season while Davidson closes out the year 7-17.
The Paladins won the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Furman’s Chris Motes and Chris Rhyne topped Davidson’s Scott Myers and Calum Gee at No. 2 doubles, 8-4. The Paladins scored an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles as Andrei Chvetsov and Jordan Walters topped Brandon Byrd and Carter Braxton.
Furman scored singles wins at No. 6, No. 4 and No. 1 to claim the 4-0 win. Sawyer Duncan improved his record to 23-2 this spring, as he came away with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Carter Braxton at No. 6 singles to push the Paladins ahead, 2-0. Motes downed Gee, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 singles before Furman’s Andy Juc closed the match by picking up a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Eric Noble at No. 1 singles.
The Paladins will compete Saturday afternoon against UNC Greensboro in one semifinal, scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.

BURLINGTON,N.C. ? The No. 4 seed UNC Greensboro Spartans pulled out a 4-2 win overGeorgiaSouthern Friday in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Championships. The Spartans (15-7) advance to face Furman Saturday in the semifinals of the tournament whileGeorgiaSouthern closes out the season at 10-10.
The Spartans earned the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3. The Eagles earned the first doubles victory as Jayraj Jadeja and Justin Flynn ofGeorgiaSouthern topped William John and Taylor Befus, 8-4, at No. 2. The Spartans claimed the final two doubles matches to earn point, beginning with a, 8-5 win at No. 1 from Orcun Seyrek and Andrey Bubnov. In a match that went the distance at No. 3 doubles, UNCG’s Yaroslav Litus and Jacob Wright (UNCG) knocked off Gregory Bekkers and Philip Prins, 9-8 (7-3).
Edio Castanhel cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 6 singles over Taylor Befus to pull the match even at one point apiece. Gregory Bekkes gave GSU a 2-1 lead in the match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jacob Wright at No. 3 singles.
UNC Greensboro then picked up the next three singles wins to take the 4-2 decision. Yaroslav Litus came away with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Justin Flynn at No. 5 minutes before Andrey Bubnov claimed a win at No. 2 singles with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) decision at No. 2. Player of the Year Orcun Seyrek topped Joris De Weerdt (7-6, 6-3) at No. 1 singles to clinch the win for the Spartans.

BURLINGTON, N.C. ? The College of Charleston earned a 4-1 victory over Wofford in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Championships Friday afternoon at the Burlington Tennis Center. The No. 6 seed Cougars improved to 11-13 on the season while Wofford completes the 2009 campaign 13-11.
The Cougars earned the doubles point thanks to a 9-7 win from Omer Abramovich and Joe Nicolazzi over Scott Collins and Tinus Van Wyk at No. 3 doubles. The two teams had split the first two doubles matches with CofC claiming an 8-5 win at No. 1 while Wofford posted an 8-3 victory at No. 2.
Mickael Boyer and Abramovich picked up the first two singles points for the Cougars. Boyer earned a straight-sets (6-3, 6-1) victory over Alan Donald at No. 5 singles. Abramovich recorded the next point for the Cougars with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Stuart Robertson of Wofford.
Wofford’s Paul Bartholomy eanred the Terriers’ lone point of the match with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Joe Nicolazzi at No. 6 singles. Mickael Trintignac’s 6-3, 6-2 win over Tinus Van Wyk at No. 3 singles gave the Cougars their fourth point of the match to sendCollegeofCharleston’s to Saturday’s semifinals.

BURLINGTON,N.C.? The Elon Phoenix knocked off Appalachian State, 4-2 on Friday in a quarterfinal matchup of the 2009 Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Championships. ThePhoenix(20-5) will take onCollegeofCharlestonin a semifinal matchup Saturday afternoon. Appalachian State closes out the season at 15-10.
ThePhoenixpicked up the doubles point as all three matches were tightly contested. Appalachian State picked up an 8-5 win from Phillip Kloc and Alain Humblet over Alberto Rojas and Cody Stauffer MacDowell at No. 3. Elon responded with a 9-7 victory at No. 1from Damon Gooch and Philip Nemec. The team of Chase Helpinstine and Oscar Podlewski came away with a 9-8 (9-7) win over Trent Constance and Peter Jacobs to give thePhoenixthe opening point of the match.
No. 2 seed Elon jumped out to a 3-0 lead after picking up singles wins from Gooch and Podlewski. Gooch knocked offBobbyLakeat No. 1singles, 6-3, 6-2. Podlewski topped Trent Constance at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-2.
The Mountaineers pulled to within one point (3-2) after back-to-back singles wins at No. 3 and No. 5. Jacobs recorded a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Philip Nemec at No. 3 for ASU while Kloc downed Rojas, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5.
