Furman’s Elijah Poritzky named SoCon player of the week

Senior went 3-1 with a win over the 47th ranked singles player this week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Elijah Poritzky has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for all competition from Feb.18-24. The selection is made by the league office.

In a 4-2 victory over Queens on Feb. 22, Poritzky teamed up with Matt Kandel at the No. 1 doubles position to defeat Laurens Blickwede and Gavin Ryan, 6-4. At the No.1 singles spot, The Palma De Mallorca, Spain, product defeated Blickwede, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Against No. 31 Clemson on Feb. 23, Poritzky defeated the 47th-ranked singles player, Noa Vukadin, at the No. 1 position, 6-3, 6-3, securing the lone point for the Paladins in a 4-1 setback. In doubles, Poritzky and Kandel faced the 44th-ranked doubles team of Vukadin and Max Smith. The duo suffered a 4-6 loss. This is the second straight year Poritzky defeated a top-100 opponent from an ACC program.

Furman (3-5, 1-0 SoCon) will host UNCG and North Greenville for a Friday, Feb. 28 doubleheader.
