BURLINGTON, N.C. – Third-seeded College of Charleston claimed a 4-1 victory over sixth-seeded Georgia Southern on Friday, April 19, in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Championship at the Burlington Tennis Center.
College of Charleston improves to 13-8 with the win and advances to the tournament semifinals tomorrow to face second-seeded Samford at 2 p.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. GSU ends its season with an 11-9 record.
Oliver Webb helped the Eagles out to an early 1-0 advantage at No. 4 singles, claiming a 6-2, 6-2, decision over College of Charleston’s Charlie Ghriskey.
But the Cougars stormed back, taking the next three singles matches to go ahead, 3-1.
Alon Faiman was victorious for the Cougars at No. 6, topping Georgia Southern’s Rafael Racy in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, to tie the match at 1-all.
College of Charleston claimed a 2-1 following a win at No. 1, as Brice Allanic registered a 7-5, 6-1, win against GSU’s Rayane Djouad.
The Cougars claimed took a 3-1 lead courtesy of Sebastian Lopez, as he defeated Albert Codina Sala at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-0.
Crescente Lesser clinched the win for College of Charleston at No. 3 after battling Georgia Southern’s Matthijs Verdam to a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5, decision to give the Cougars a 4-1 advantage.

BURLINGTON, N.C. – The second-seeded Samford Bulldogs advanced to the semifinals of the 2013 Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Championship with a 4-1 decision over seventh-seeded Davidson on Friday, April 19, at the Burlington Tennis Center.
Samford improves to 13-9 with the win and will face the winner of third-seeded College of Charleston and sixth-seeded Georgia Southern tomorrow, April 20, at 2 p.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. Davidson ends its 2013 season with a 12-9 record.
Fares Kilani helped the Bulldogs jump out to an early 1-0 lead after topping Davidson’s Chris Mark in straight sets at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2.
At No. 6, Samford’s Garrison Laduca extended his squad’s lead to 2-0, defeating Davidson’s Alex Howard, 6-2, 6-0, in straight sets.
Alex Sajonz helped the Bulldogs come within a point of clinching the match at No. 4 singles, topping Robert Lightbourn, 6-1, 7-6 (9-7), to give Samford a 3-0 edge.
Davidson’s Connor Evins limited the Bulldogs to a 3-1 lead at No. 5, claiming a three-set win, 0-6, 6-2, 6-1, versus Austin Akers to keep his team alive.
But Samford’s Elliot Barnwell won a hard-fought match at No. 2 to clinch the win for the Bulldogs, topping Davidson’s Nicky Kunz in three sets, 2-6, 6-0, 7-6 (10-8), to give his team the win. With Barnwell leading 9-8 in the third-set tiebreaker, Kunz double-faulted on his serve, giving Barnwell the final point to win it.

BURLINGTON, N.C. – The fifth-seeded Chattanooga Mocs upset fourth-seeded UNCG, 4-3, in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Championship on April 19 at the Burlington Tennis Center.
After the two teams battled to a 3-all tie in singles, the Mocs managed to take two doubles matches to earn the fourth and final point to clinch the win. UTC’s Manuel Barroetavena and Jackson Tresnan defeated UNCG’s William Albright and Jimmy Roueche, 8-1, at No. 3 to inch the Mocs closer. Roberto Vieira and Ankit Chopra won it for UTC at No. 1, defeating UNCG’s James Dougherty and Randy Phillips, 8-3.

But the Spartans tied the match shortly thereafter after Phillips came up with a 7-5, 6-4, decision at No. 4 against Chattanooga’s Chris Smith.
UNCG took a 2-1 edge in a thriller at No. 2 singles, as Dougherty rebounded from a first set loss to defeat UTC’s Barroetavena in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).
Daniel Mack gave the Spartans a 3-1 advantage at No. 5 singles, claiming a three-set win against Chattanooga’s Pavels Grigorjevs, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.
But Chattanooga’s Chopra brought the Mocs back within one, 3-2, at No. 3 singles, defeating UNCG’s Gaston Murray in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Tresnan tied it a 3-all and forced the match to shift to doubles after battling UNCG’s Cameron Smith to a 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-4) decision at No. 6.
BURLINGTON, N.C. – The top-seeded Elon University men’s tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the 2013 Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Championship with a 4-0 decision against eighth-seeded Furman on Friday morning, April 19, at the Burlington Tennis Center.
Elon (16-7) takes on the winner of fourth-seeded UNCG and fifth-seeded Chattanooga tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. Furman ends its season with a record of 9-14.
Stefan Fortmann clinched the match win for the maroon and gold at No. 2 singles, as the sophomore claimed a 6-2, 6-4, victory over Furman’s Matt Browne to put Elon ahead, 4-0.
Robert Lindgren was the first to finish for Elon at No. 3 singles, as the rookie registered a straight sets win, 6-4, 6-0, against Furman’s Alex Christ to give the Phoenix an early edge.
Brian Kowalski pushed Elon out to a 2-0 advantage at No. 5 singles, defeating Furman’s Luke Synn in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
Cameron Silverman, this year’s SoCon Men’s Tennis Player of the Year and ranked 59th in the nation, extended Elon’s lead to 3-0 and put his team within a point of clinching the match after defeating Andrew Mellow, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1 singles.
