Wednesday's Men's Tennis Results

No. 7 Wofford 4, No. 10 The Citadel 0

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Wofford Terriers used a strong performance from the bottom of their singles lineup to down The Citadel, 4-0, Wednesday in the first round of the Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Tournament.

After securing the doubles point, Wofford picked up wins at No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles to secure the win.  Parks Thompson gave the Terriers at 2-0 lead in the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Connor Grady at No. 6.  Jackson Keith pushed Wofford ahead, 3-0 minutes later with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Jackson Keith at the No. 5 position.

Trevor Gotkowski clinched the match for Wofford with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Oliver Dedding at No. 4 singles. 

Wofford picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to earn the doubles point.  Keith and David Sklar topped Dedding and Grady, 8-1 at No. 3, while Thompson and Walker Heffron knocked off Peter Bleach and Pride, 8-4 at No. 2

The Terriers (9-12) advance to face second-seeded Furman in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

 

No. 9 Chattanooga 4, No. 8 Davidson 2

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Jorge Varon’s victory at No. 2 singles pushed Chattanooga to a 4-2 victory over Davidson in the 2014 Southern Conference Tennis Tournament Wednesday afternoon at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.  Varon held off Davidson’s Ethan Kallick (7-5, 7-6 [8-6]) for the final match point.  Chattanooga (7-13) advances to face top-seeded Elon Thursday, while Davidson (5-18) concludes its season.

In a back-and-forth match, Chattanooga took a 1-0 lead by capturing the doubles point.  After Davidson won the No. 2 doubles position, Chattanooga won at No. 3.  The point hinged on the top spot where Pavels Grigorjevs and Jorge Varon held off Robert Lightbourn and Conner Evins to give the Mocs the early lead.

Davidson’s Evan Watkins pulled the Wildcats even with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over John Peacey at No. 5 singles.  Davidson then moved ahead in the match, 2-1, when Evins posted a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Luke Saunders at No. 3 singles. 

UTC’s Derrick Brown earned a 7-5, 6-1 win over Ricky Saad at No. 6 singles to pull the Mocs even at 2-2.  At the top of the lineup Pavels Grigorjevs won in two sets over Lightbourn (7-6 [7-2], 6-3) to set up the Mocs with a 3-2 lead in the match.
