Bucs Claim Men's Tennis Crown

ETSU 4, Furman 0

GREENVILLE, S.C.
– The ETSU Buccaneers captured the 2015 Southern Conference Men’s Tennis tournament title with a 4-0 win over Furman Sunday afternoon.  ETSU last won the SoCon tournament in 2005, prior to departing for the Atlantic Sun.  The Bucs claimed both the regular season and tournament championship in their first season back in the SoCon.

ETSU (17-7) claimed the doubles point in dramatic fashion as all three courts were highly contested.  Furman (10-16) won at No. 2 as Adam Steryous and Cameron Green secured an 8-6 win over Ismael Merino and Robert Herrera.

The Bucs responded with a win at No. 3 from Diego Nunez and Conner Huertas.  They held off Furman’s Jacob Behal and Juan Sheppard, 8-6.  The Bucs then clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 win at No. 1 from David Biosca and Rogerio Ribeiro over Matt Browne and Ben Horst.

ETSU continued its strong play in singles action as Riberio claimed a 6-3, 6-3 win over Browne at No. 2 to give the Bucs a 2-0 lead.  Merino posted a straight-sets win (7-6, 6-1) over Sheppard at No. six singles before Nunez secured the match for ETSU with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 over Green.

Sophomore David Biosca of ETSU was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

With Sunday’s victory, ETSU will advance to the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships.
