#8 Chattanooga 4, #9 Davidson 3
CHARLESTON, S.C. - In a thrilling match between the No. 8 seed Chattanooga and No. 9 seed Davidson, the Mocs advanced to play in Friday's semifinals round with a 4-3 victory.
Chattanooga earned the doubles point to take early lead in the match as Ankit Chopra and Stephen Crofford defeated Davidson's Kevin Moore and Ethan Kallick in the No. 3 position 8-5. The Mocs duo of Manuel Barroetavena and Jackson Tresnan defeated the Wildcat's Chris Mark and Nicky Kunz in the No. 2 position 8-6. In the No. 1 slot Davidson's Joe Schafer and Calum Gee and Chattanooga's Roberto Vieria and Chris Smith declared unfinished at 7-7.
Pavels Grigorjevs earned the second point for Chattanooga in the No. 6 singles position defeating Connor Evins in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Davidson's Kunz defeated the Moc's Smith 6-0, 6-3 to give Davidson its first point of the match. Gee defeated Chopra 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 even the match at 2-2.
The Wildcats took their first lead on the day with a victory in the No. 1 slot as Schafer defeated Vieira 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. The Mocs' Barroetavena tied the match at 3-3 with a win over Mark 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. The match came down to the No. 5 spot where Tresnan defeated Lightbourn 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 and sent the Mocs to the quarterfinals.
Chattanooga (14-8) will meet No. 1 seed College of Charleston Friday at 8:30 a.m. at the College of Charleston Tennis Center. Davidson ends the season at 7-14.
#10 Georgia Southern 4, #7 Wofford 2
CHARLESTON, S.C. - The tenth-seeded Georgia Southern Eagles upset No.7 Wofford 4-2 on Thursday in the first round of the Men's Southern Conference Tournament at Patriots Point.
Wofford took the early lead on the day taking the doubles point. In the No. 1 position the duo of Alain Garrido and Andrew Dromsky defeated Tinus Van Wyk and Rob Galloway 8-3. The Terriers evened the playing field winning in the No. 3 position as Jackson Keith and Walker Heffron defeated the Eagles' Daniel Rush and Derrick Davison 8-5. The point was ultimately won by Wofford in the No. 2 position by Stuart Robertson and Tom Wood as they defeated Kyle Hoffman and Matthijs Verdam 8-6.
The Terriers went up 2-0 in the match with a victory in the No. 3 singles position as Drew Superstein defeated the Eagles' Hoffman 6-1, 6-2. Dromsky of Georgia Southern defeated Robertson in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to give the Eagles their first point of the match. Georgia Southern took the lead for the first time, 3-2, as Verdam and Osorio defeated their Eagles opponents, in the No. 4 and 5 spots, respectively.
After a rain delay and a move to Patriots Point, play resumed in the No. 1 and No. 5 positions. Albert Codina Sala defeated Heffron 7-5, 6-3 to earn the fourth point for GSU.
Georgia Southern will move onto the semifinals to face off against No. 2 seed Samford on Friday at 1 p.m., at Patriots Point.
#6 Elon 4, #11 The Citadel 0
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Sixth-seeded Elon topped the No. 11 seed Citadel Bulldogs 4-0, Thursday night in the first round of the Southern Conference men's tennis tournament. With the win the Phoenix advance to Friday's quarterfinal where Elon will take on No. 3 Appalachian State.
Due to weather delays earlier in the day, the match started with singles play. Freshman Stefan Fortmann put the Phoenix on the board with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Josh Cook at No. 2 singles. Jordan Kaufman pushed Elon ahead 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over James Atkinson at No. 3.
Juan Madrid moved up to the fifth spot for Elon and scored a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Peter Bleach, giving the Phoenix a 3-0 advantage.
The matchup on court one featured two all-conference performers as Elon's Cameron Silverman battled The Citadel's David Orces. Orces won the first set 7-6, but Silverman battled back to win the second and third sets 6-1, 6-2 and give Elon the win.
Elon improves to 9-14 while The Citadel falls to 5-18.
