Furman claims 10th straight SoCon cross country titles
Paladins also sweep individual titles

JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. – Furman won its 10th straight men’s and women’s titles at the 2022 Southern Conference Cross Country Championships, hosted by The Citadel on Sunday at Johns Island County Park on Johns Island, South Carolina. The Paladins’ Dylan Schubert won the men’s race, while Furman’s Bethany Graham captured her second straight individual title, in meet-record time.
The men’s 8K race led off the day at 10 a.m. Schubert, a junior from Loveland, Colorado, finished in 23:41.5 to pace five Furman runners in the top 10 and lead the Paladins to the team win with 27 points. Furman became just the second team to win 10 straight men’s titles and the first since William & Mary did so from 1966-75.
ETSU’s Evan Guzman finished second in 24:05.5, followed by UNCG’s Joe Thoma in third at 24:14.4. Furman’s David Ahlmeyer and Carson Williams followed in fourth and fifth, while Mercer’s Vladi Zander-Velloso and Furman’s Adam Beucler were sixth and seventh, respectively, to round out the All-SoCon first team.
Schubert, Furman’s seventh straight individual men’s champion, was named the SoCon Runner of the Year. ETSU coach George Watts was tabbed the SoCon of the Year for the first time in his career after leading the Bucs to their second straight runner-up and fifth in six years.
The Bucs finished with 55 team points, while Mercer was third with 100.
Samford’s Andrew McGinnis finished 15th overall in 25:02.8, earning SoCon Freshman of the Year honors as the first true freshman finisher.
Furman senior Josh Powers, a Spanish major from Greenville, South Carolina, earned the Pinnacle Award as the member of championship-winning team with the highest GPA.
The women’s 5K race followed at 10:45 a.m., with Graham crossing first in 16:22.3 to surpass the women’s meet record, edging the mark of 16:22.62 set by Samford’s Karisa Nelson in 2016. Graham, a junior from Aldie, Virginia, became the 10th runner to win multiple titles on the women’s side and the first since Wofford’s Hannah Steelman in 2018 and 2019.
Graham, the SoCon Runner of the Year, was the first of six straight Furman runners to cross the finish line, as the 27th-ranked Paladins scored a meet-record 15 points, surpassing the record of 18 that they set last year. Abigail Robertson, Emily Little, Sierra Bower, Megan Marvin and Madelynne Cadeau followed Graham in that order, with Samford’s McKenzie Hogue coming in seventh to complete the All-SoCon first team.
Furman’s Robert Gary was named the women’s SoCon Coach of the Year for the 10th straight season. Carly Wilkes, who finished eighth overall, became Furman’s third straight SoCon Freshman of the Year on the women’s side.
Marvin, a junior economics major from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and the fifth-place finisher, was Furman’s Pinnacle Award winner for the second straight season.
Samford claimed the runner-up team finish with 62 team points. The Bulldogs finished second for the fourth straight year and sixth time in seven seasons. ETSU was third with 82 points.
