SoCon Softball Championship bracket set

Chattanooga claims No. 1 seed for the second straight season

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Chattanooga is the SoCon regular-season champion and will be the No. 1 seed in the Southern Conference Softball Championship presented by One Spartanburg, which will be contested at Hope Field in Spartanburg, South Carolina, from May 7-10.

All eight Southern Conference teams will participate in the tournament, with seeds 5 and 8 participating in a single-elimination game on Wednesday, May 7, at 10 a.m., and seeds 6 and 7 playing in a single-elimination game later that day at 1 p.m. for the right to advance to the double-elimination portion of the bracket. The championship game will take place on Sunday, May 10, at 1 p.m., with a second game, if necessary, beginning 30 minutes after the completion of the first contest.

Chattanooga (39-13, 15-5 SoCon) defeated ETSU on Sunday to claim the top seed for the second straight season. The Mocs leads the league in triples (15), fielding percentage (.976) and strikeouts thrown (406).  

With the top seed, the Mocs earned a bye to Thursday’s action at the tournament and will take on either No. 4 seed Wofford, No. 5 seed Mercer or No. 8 Furman. Chattanooga took two of three games at Wofford on April 18-19 and won a pair of matchups with Mercer on March 29. The Mocs swept the Paladins on April 12-13.

UNCG (38-16, 14-6) secured the No. 2 seed with wins over Western Carolina on Sunday. The Spartans lead the SoCon in runs (324), RBIs (308) and home runs (77).

With the No. 2 seed, UNCG earned a bye to Thursday’s action at the tournament and will face either No. 3 seed Samford, No. 6 Western Carolina or No. 7 seed ETSU. The Spartans won two of three contests versus the Bulldogs on April 12-13 and the Bucs on April 18-19. UNCG took a pair of games from the Catamounts on Sunday.

 

No. 5 seed Mercer (31-23, 11-9) closed out the regular season with five straight victories, punctuated by a three-game sweep of Furman over the weekend. The Paladins (15-37, 5-16) will be the No. 8 seed in the tournament. The two teams will face off on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the first game of the tournament.

 
Western Carolina (22-30, 6-14) is the No. 6 seed in the tournament and will face No. 7 ETSU (17-35, 6-15) on Wednesday at 1 p.m. The Catamounts won two of the three regular season matchups on March 22-23.
 

Samford (31-21, 12-7) wrapped up the No. 3 seed after defeating Wofford, 4-3, on Saturday. The Bulldogs will face the winner of the ETSU and Western Carolina game at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Wofford (30-20, 11-8), the No. 4 seed, will play the winner of Mercer and Furman at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
