Chattanooga’s Sellers, Wofford’s Axelson honored

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Chattanooga infielder Acelynn Sellers and Wofford right-hander Margaret Axelson have been named the Southern Conference softball player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for their efforts over the first weekend of the season. The awards are selected by the league office.

Chattanooga’s Sellers hit .533, helping the Mocs grab two wins during the Frank Griffin Classic in DeLand, Florida. The senior opened the season going 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and two runs scored in an 8-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Feb. 7. Later that day, she had a hit, a walk and an RBI in a 4-3 win over Binghamton. On Feb. 8, in a 14-10 setback against Stetson, Sellers tied the program record for home runs in a single game with three and broke the program record for total bases in that contest with 13. The native of Rocky Face, Georgia, went 4-for-4 in the game with six RBIs.

Wofford’s Axelson went 2-0 in two appearances over the weekend during the Terrier Invite in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The junior from Atlanta, Georgia, threw a complete game in a 4-3 win over Towson on Feb. 7, recording seven strikeouts and surrendering just one earned run. Two days later, Axelson threw another complete game, finishing with four strikeouts in a 4-2 win versus Dayton, who was picked as the preseason favorite in the Atlantic 10. For the weekend, Axelson allowed just nine hits in 14 innings of work inside the circle.
